Thanks Dana for your advice.  I did it all...adjusted my squelch, turned on the noise reducer on the radio itself, ordered the resistor spark plugs from California Power Systems and saw significant improvement in reducing the noise on my handheld radio this morning.  I may still see about getting an external antenna...need to do some more testing.
