This may help......
On a previous plane I used the capacitive probes and was pleased with the results.
On my 701, which is 90+%, engine running, will taxi under its own power, etc, I am again using this type probe.
Once assisted in attempting to calibrate the float-type for another fellow; not a memorable experience.
We never got it right!
Here's what I did on the 701: Cut the appropriate hole to mount the probe in the approximate location shown by ZAC. Cut the probe length such that the probe came within 1/4" of the bottom of the tank.
Once you have the probe ready to install, don't seal it just yet.
Then, to actually calibrate the probe, I used a piece of PVC pipe same length as tank depth, with a pipe cap on the bottom end, and the pipe in a vertical position.
Putting the probe into the pipe from the top simulates the tank.
Filling the pipe to various levels with fuel simulates the various levels of fuel in the tank.
You can set "zero" and "span" with your indicator attached using a 12-volt battery.
All the calibration can be done on a workbench.
I would look carefully to see that the probe is actually "vertical" when the aircraft is level.
If it is somewhere other than vertical, simply tilt the test pipe to match the position that the probe will be in when installed.
On the previous plane the tank held 12 gallons. After my bench-calibration I installed the probe and filled the tank by pouring in one gallon at a time, and checking the fuel gauge. Tracked perfectly!
You really need to use clean 12 volts (from a battery), not a battery charger, to power the probe/indicator while calibrating.
Most capacitive probes have documentation showing various installation methods. It is possible to mount the probe in one top corner, and bend the probe such that the stem extends to the far diagonal bottom corner, thereby mking the probe as long as possible. The added length increases the "span" and could make your reading more accurate. Westach makes a 270-degree, 3-inch, indicator which works well for this.
Others may have a better method, but this worked well for me.
Regards,
Zed/701/R912/etc

Zewd,
