I'd sure like to find some of that transparent aluminum.

I saw them up at Zenair on Friday. I think they are easier to install, but look just the same as the old two piece version. I like the two piece version since you can get access to the wing tip light easier if you need to.
In talking with they guys up at Zenair, they are making changes as they go from things they learn while building the LSA's for the US and European market. I believe the wingtips were done to allow for quicker installation....kind of like the new canopy they showed me.......much easier to install....

I'm not sure I will look when I go to the shop tonight and let you know. >From my experience with Zenith the plans don't change for awhile after a change because they have to wait until they send out all the ones they have printed but I will check.

I always install my wing tip with plate nuts so it can be removed so now it will require a lot more and I would also install the power unit for the strobs on the forward side of the spar and the wing tip was the access but now I'm thinking of an access hole and rivet the tip on. Decisions decisions.......

Could you elaborate on the new canopy...? Any pictures?
I heard that Zenith now sells Todd's Canopies, and I heard rumors that there was something in the works regarding the canopy, but no details yet.
The canopy is the only airframe component I lack, and I'd sure like to hold off buying it if something new is in the works....
Thanks,
- Pat

Patrick, If there is even a chance that there is going to be an easier to install canopy kit I would highly recommend that you and anyone else wait for it until the very last minute. Installing the canopy SUCKS!!!

I think the difficulty of installing the canopy is what caused the change. The factory in Canada, that builds the LSA for the US market (they get finished in the US) and Europe hated how hard it was to install the canopy so they are making a rolling change (along with some other things you will likely see at OSH) on the canopy. My understanding is that the new canopy will show up on the LSA first and slowly make it into the kit. In talking with the guys at the factory, I was told the canopy is not retrofitable. Basically the canopy has a fixed front part that does not move off the fuselage and a swinging part just aft of the instrument panel (kind of like a sliding RV canopy but with the rear section swinging up rather than sliding back). There is a roll hoop built into the rear edge of the fixed part. The rear section swings like the original. It was in pieces when I saw it since it was prototype #1. What is really nice is the latching system that has a hooks coming up by the upper longerons that are joined via a control arm and are operated by a single handle between the seats by the arm rest.
I have no pictures and all of this was from memory but it looked really nice. They showed it to me without me asking and didnt tell me I could not say anything about the mods. However, remember that it was a prototype and still a work in process. I talked with a group of guys who went up this past friday and they saw the completed canopy on a plane and said it looked REALLY nice.
Hope that helps
Paul

If Paul's info is even close to right I strongly suggest to everyone wait for it if you can. If I was at that point in the process I'd be calling Zenith and asking them for any info I could get on the new canopy.

My Zodiac won't have the new canopy, but it will have this latch. I've seen
it, and it looks like it'll be a lot better.
