Recent test flights indicate very high CHTs on my 912UL. I am
wondering if
a larger size coolant radiator would help lower the temps. Presently
using
Evans + coolant. What size rad are others using and where did you
purchase the rad.

On my Trike UL with the same engine I just put a small metal flange scoop at
the radiator intake and it cools the water temp down nicely.

Mike,

CHTs with Evans are supposed to be higher than with water-based
coolant. That said, most people get by with the Europa-supplied
radiator. Some easy ways to improve its efficiency:
Force more ducted air through the radiator by either raising the
floor of the cowl towards the radiator (many start with a 2-3 inch
gap) or by putting an Aluminum plate on the bottom of the oil radiator
to force more air through both

Mike: I don't know what radiator configuration you have, or where your
radiator is located. The Rotax 912 UL Installation manual suggests a minimum
area of 500 square centimeters (78 sq. in.). Every installation is
different. I have an Allegro 2000 with a 912 UL engine, and a radiator with
an area of 420 sq. cm. The location of my radiator is behind and beneath the
engine and is in a horizontal position. Not a good position in my opinion,
but that is the only practical place for it on my plane. I run a 50/50
water/glycol mixture as my coolant. My engine is fully coweled with very
little ram air area around the OD of the spinner. With this configuration I
have to be careful not to sit on the ground very long on a hot summer day
here in the Carolinas with my engine running, or my CHT will quickly get
into the yellow. However, once I am airborne I have no problem with the CHT
temp.

You can get this same radiator, together with the required expansion tank,
and overflow bottle from Lockwood Aviation Supply in Sebring, FL. If your
radiator does not have at least 420 sq. cm. of frontal area, you should get
a radiator with at least that much area.

Hi Mike,

You have three choices here and the guys have hit on them.
1. Larger radiator
2. better forced air through the radiator
3. switch back to 50/50 ( Evans is a very good coolant because it has no corrosion problems and a high boil over temp. it does raise your CHT's approximately 25-40F depending again on the radiator set up. water is able to absorb more BTU's from the engine, but it has a lower boiling point. Going back to 50/50 is ok if you can not get the CHT's back down with the other two suggestions, but then you will need to use the lower CHT/water temp)
P.S.

I almost forgot. Before doing all this make sure your prop is loaded correctly. This will affect engine temps. especially on two strokes.
