Pat- First off, as you are well aware of, ANYTHING is possible in Scotland! We do have some huge snapping turtles around here. They are found around wet areas, and eat fish, ducks, and geese. I saw a big one bite a cop's rosewood billy club in half, while they were trying to move it off a road. Some will weigh 50 pounds. They look like a dinosaur- scales, spikey tail, a beak like a huge parrot, and large claws. They are a reptile, and can strike very fast. Strong enough jaws to put a good ding in a landing gear leg, if not snap it. Figure 2-3 feet long total, a foot high, and about as wide. Predatory in the extreme. Do not hit one on landing, and don't try to catch one by hand. They are bigger down south. Yes, you can eat them. Turtle whistles are usually effective, and the best ones come from somewhere down south. You definately don't want to hit one with a Kolb. It can ruin your day. Deer are high enough to hurt the pilot- same as hitting one with a car.

BillYou're right about trying to avoid snapping turtles -- largest in  N . America. The largest on record is a whopping 236 pounds!

I've we helped handle a 125-lb'er, and his head looked like a basketball. But worse.

BTW they are edible, but IMHO not worth the effort to clean. However, there are a few hunters who supply restaurants in NYC  with them.

Can't you just see a guy on TV -- "What's your line?"  --   "Well, er, umm --"

 Hah!  Every few years we get some in the lake where I spend my summers.  When I was a kid they were constantly around one year, everybody used to throw rocks at them to keep them out of the swimming area.  One evening I was swimming and saw what I first took for a clump of seaweed under me... but then I realized seaweed didn't have arms and legs to swim along with me... I think I made my very first solo flight that night (see, this is still flying related) when I levitated out of the water through sheer fright!



 Past couple of years, though, it's been bears, not turtles, giving us fits.  Haven't seen either at the airport... though sometimes we would chase coyotes off the airport with our PPG's.

 Best of luck. Nearest I have been to a turtle is  the sea going variety and I grabbed his shell as it swim past and enjoyed a  great ride for as long as my breath held out.. Surprising amount of power when  he surged ahead when I grabbed him.

  

 Just like opening the throttle on a Kolb. See, it  was flying related.

PatIf you can push down  hard enuf on the rear of a big turtle's shell, while also holding onto the front just behind his head, he'll angle up like a Kolb  on takeoff. This gets your head above water & you can ride for as long as your arms hold out!

I tried that once in Hawaii, but just as I was about to grab on, he turned around mouth wide open and tried to take a chunk out of me

 Hi Russ,

 didn`t have the time for clever stuff like that and  I was in an area where it was forbidden to touch the turtles anyway. I was just  grateful that I reacted quickly enough to grab him as he swam by. Great  experience.

.. or a lake bed that LOOKS dry, but is actually mud beneath a thin

layer of dry crust.
