How many of you scratch builders have actually built your spars? Have heard that many buy the spars for their project.

I did (CH601-HD), with the help of an RV builder, who had all the equipment to set solid rivets - not to mention the experience.

I think quite a few folks on this list have built their spars. It's fairly time consuming, but not extremely difficult.

I built my spars from scratch, but when I ordered the .025 spar web, I
was surprised that they cut it exactly 209mm. That saved me a lot of
trimming. I managed to get the three sheets required for the ribs and the
spar webs plus a few extra pieces cut small enough to get it into my
station wagon. My spars are completely riveted and ready for ribs and
skin. The spars were not that difficult to drill and rivet, at least I
don't think so.. good luck Ron keep plugging.....Do not archive

I built mine and hand hammered all the solid rivets in a 1 ton arbor press.

Hi Ron,
I built the spars for my 601HDS and found the process rather basic and
not too hard. I used a backing
block and 2-lb sledge for the first few, but finished it with an air
hammer and found air power to be much easier.
Bending is making a short sample, checking it and then going for the
finish piece.
I'm sure you could do it as well.

I scratch built the tail section ( Daves brake worked well for this) and next is the fuselage (trying to decide on the whole slat/VG thing, insurance guy will ultimately decide, if I can get insurance for a VG wing thats what I'll build)
But I plan on buying the spar and all the welded parts. Mostly because of the time it would take. The process looks involved but not difficult?
So you can call me a partial scratch builder! Very Happy
