My airport is AZ05. Gila Bend AZ. I will not be there until November with N123WL. Hope to finish build by end of June. My wife and I are in Shelbyville,TN for summer and it is very HOT.

Living in Southern Illinois, I've discovered that it's not so much the temperature but the dew point that tells you what you need to know. When watching the weather forecasts, I look more at the overnight lows, than the afternoon highs, to determine how many shirts I'll need the next day.

Hi Earl and all Lightning listers,
Wayne and I talked about Gila Bend and his private strip (with a water skiing lake) while we were both in SYI some time ago. His strip is located about half way between Gila Bend and Buckeye. His place is new, because it was not there while I was the base commander at the Gila Bend ranges. At the time the only airport close was Pierce near Buckeye. While there I kept my Bonanza at the base and used it to fly to and from staff meetings at Luke several times a week. Made for a 15 min. flight verses a 1+15 drive in my staff car. Kept the Pitts at Litchfield Park just south of Luke.
Anyway, Wayne and Nell's place looks to be kind of "isolated" which would make for a great flying location with no neighbors to worry about when doing high speed formation fly bys, etc.. Perfect place. Maybe we could talk them into hosting a "western" Lightning fly-in at sometime in the future. And speaking of "hosting", Wayne you might talk to the current Gila Bend commander and get him to host a fly-in there. I did that while I was there and opened up the base for any EAA member to fly into the base and we had a picnic for them and gave them a mission brief on all that goes on at the ranges. The EAA chapters in the area seemed to really enjoy the event. Also did one later for the Flying Farmers.
Here is some more "just for grins" information: N31BZ now has just over 450 hours in the last 2 &1/2 years. I passed that total time Saturday morning flying over to Wakefield to meet with Joe and Linda. I think she now has about 80 hours on 59JL. We were doing some airspeed runs with the new FK blade profile prop she has on JL now.
One other thought on 31BZ - in the 450 hours flown I have had absolutely no engine or airframe problems. I run the engine fairly hard (as most of you know) and have only done normal maintenance, oil and filter changes, and new spark plugs about every 100 hours. By normal maintenance I am talking about head torques and valve adjustments as my engine is an older one that has the solid lifters. I change oil and filter at 25 to 30 hour intervals, using Aeroshell W100 Plus. Since spark plugs are so cheap when compared with standard aircraft plugs I don't worry about cleaning and regaping. I just replace them with new. One other thing I did at the 250 hour point was to replace rotors, caps and plug wires. They all looked fine, but at the time the maintenance manual called for them to be changed at 200 hours. That manual has now changed to "replace as required" wording. Realistically, they are probably good for at least 300 if not 500 hours.
Hope everyone is thinking forward to Oshkosh.
Blue Skies,
Buz
