I find the best way to slow down over the runway is to skip the flaps, I don't like them either, they take away from the use of the ailerons for one, and it's just one more thing to do, and finally you loose the ability to flair, well you get a bunch of nose down pressure. So what do I do, simple, I slip to land and then I maintain the slip over the runway,level flight, cross control, whatever you want to call it until I hit 60mph and than I straighten things out and do a normal landing.

talk about fun, if you are well experienced this is a fun one. A lot of times I'll level the wings and leave in full rudder, usually right, mainly so I can see down the runway, in fact I won't use left rudder, you can't see.

The best thing to do with the certified planes is to RTFM before flying. If you find anything you’re not sure of ask someone who is familiar with the plane. Either way when flying a new plane read the manual and get a checkout, certified or not.

My instructor had me try a stalls and a slips, at 5000’ with full flaps. Yes things did get bouncy, especially when trying to recover from the slip. I wouldn’t want to try it close to the ground. The other thing is the flaps on the 172 really slow things down for the last few degrees of operation. The nose drops pretty well and you can do a steep approach without slipping. I used to touch down and stop before passing two dots on the centreline of the runway into less than 19 mph wind... mind you I was solo and very light. Take offs took considerably longer. No noe will accuse the 172 of being STOL. J

After returning one day from training in my Kitfox, my instructor
took over during the landing, slipped it to within 30-40 feet of the
runway, then gave it back to me. I landed and asked him if he thought
I was too high on approach, and he said "No, I was just f- - - ing
with you." I was paying attention to my landing at that point for
sure, but I don't think his hand was very far from the stick when he
gave it back. : )

Gary, Well said -- !! I been trying to emphasize this point to this list without much success. I like to know every edge of everything i touch from Skis doos to airplanes to women <snicker> If you don't go there you will never get to be more competent.

Ps you obviously have found what a differance it makes but I will say Models 1, 2 and 3 will give you less gain than a IV from my experience.

I agree with Gary. However, the model of Kitfox can make a difference. I
use flaps on every landing and takeoff. My strip is relatively short so on
takeoff it gets me in ground effect quicker for faster acceleration, and on
landing it lowers my stall speed for a slower approach. Just prior to
touchdown I retract the flaps and it settles in nicely without float for
some very short approach/landings.
It just takes some practice.
