Good price if you don't mind a narrow deck engine and unknown
preservation/storage. Not to mention all the choices about parts used
etc. already made for you.
Good if you are ready to install, not so good if you are a year or two
away from finishing.

I wish this had been around when I was looking for an engine! I used to leave in the town over from Ly-Con and they are a great outfit. It would certainly be worth asking about when it was overhauled and who's providing the warranty, but I would jump at this in a heartbeat (and no they don't know me and there's no kickback, unfortunately). I worked with a couple guys from Ly-Con on my Skybolt's IO-540 when I did a top overhaul and learned a lot of good things about them. One final caveat, my experience was in 1998 so things may have changed.

Hey Guys,

My partner pulled the trigger and did the "Buy it now" on this engine -- on MY Ebay account by mistake since we had pulled it up on my account to look at it at his house.

It has some "iffy" history -- new in 1965 and hit a fence in 1965, overshot runway night landing in Tenn. And then prop strike listed by present owner ("hard landing - gear and cowl damage") in CA but no FAA report?

It's supposed to arrive later next week and we'll see what we get. They assured us the crank was checked, balanced, etc. -- any other obvious things we should be looking for?

Van's says that the mounts on it for the Piper Comanche 260 should match up -- we'll see.

Look very carefully at what documentation you get. Prop strikes
generally are not reportable incidents to the FAA.
What inspections were done on the engine? If it doesn't come with the
work order and all other paperwork from Lycon, I would contact Lycon
immediately for copies of all their paperwork. They are reputable and
should have those copies for at least one year after the overhaul.
They should be able to tell you what they did on the critical items
like the crank, crankcase, crank gear and accessory gears. Those take
the most stress in a prop strike. Since the 260 Comanche is the
source of the engine Van's chose, I would expect it to have the
correct mounts, although I don't know if that aircraft ever had more
than one style mount.

Thanks for the input Kelly and Pete.

The engine arrived yesterday with lots of documentation and of course it looks brand new -- a little bead blasting and paint can make anything pretty, but it looks really professionally top notch.

There will be a ton of questions eventually, but for now we've mounted it (really only took a few minutes -- but understand the builder's warped sense of time!) so that today we can get the cowl fitted.

A couple of beginning questions: I've read about the newer, lighter starters ... this one has what appears to be a new starter, but how do I tell if it's old or new style? And, are shop manuals available for this engine? At first glance I noticed that there are 2 threaded ports on the back of each mag -- three are open, one has a cap on it -- what are these? It has one line connected to what looks like an intake port on one cylinder, the others are plugged ... ? I had to take the 90 elbows off the top of the vacuum pump to get it past the engine mount -- looks like I'll have to put an extension on the forward one to get it back on to clear the mount bar? What's the vacuum pump for? Sheesh, so much to learn, but it's Xmas in July!

I think my partner will probably hire a Lycoming guy to do final installation, but I'd like to learn everything about this engine. A shop manual would probably answer these questions (and hundreds more) but I thought I'd ask here for a quick response, and maybe point me in the direction of "how to" books for this engine like others have recommended for basic building and flying.

The first car engine I pulled and totally rebuilt was a Jaguar V-12, so this looks like fun to me!
