I plan on having a simple set up to remove the cowl bonnet my model 7. The originally kit came with a permanent sealer to fill the gaps left by shaping of the top round end of the firewall that fit up against the bonnet. Is there a descent rubber seal that can fill the wide openings but still be squeezed thin?

George,

The question becomes...do you want a fire retardant material to fill the gap? I looked and looked for something that would work and was fire retardant but the only thing I could come up with was RTV. I took some packaging tape and applied it to the underside of the boot cowl and then filled the gap with RTV and let it cure. It worked pretty good but I didn't like the looks of it so I peeled it off and ended up with simple weather stripping. It isn't fireproof or even resistant but my cowl will burn off in a fire anyway. I thought about using the silicone tape they use for baffling but didn't want to go to the effort to make it work. Let us know if you fine a compressible foam sealant that is fire resistant. Good Luck.

I used "Fiberfax" insulation. You can buy it from Aircraft Spruce (part number 05-02678). I attached it to the firewall flange with red high temp RTV. It is very thin so I was able to put it on after I drilled the mounting holes. It is good for 2300 degrees so the boot cowl will go long before this seal.
