Howdy folks,

If you're looking for an easy way to form those leading edge skins, the vacuum bag method is the way to go. It way surprisingly easy and produced a perfect bend.

E-mail me if you want details and a link to a video of the process.

That's got to be the neatest trick I've seen in years!

Thanks

Dave,
I'm really glad you posted the photos. I was also hoping to use PVC pipe, but wasn't sure it would be stiff enough. I have a couple small questions though. When you bent your nose skin, did you make the nose skin wide and center the pipe and trim afterward? Or, did you use the 407mm top and 411mm bottom to locate the pipe? Also, what size pipe is that? It looks bigger than the 1-3/8 called for in the drawings.
Thanks again.

Hi Dan,

The nose skin in the photos was for a Sonex. That's why the pipe looked larger. It was 1.5" schedule 40 PVC. I made clamps out of scrap .040 which I screwed to my table to hold the pipe down. Stiffness was not an issue. You should make the top and bottom dimensions the same so you can pull the skin edges together. Trim after bending.

This really was surprisingly easy. Check out the videos here for more details:

Many aspects of building the Sonex and a Zenith design are the same. I've learned a lot from both camps.
