AMD uses a pair of clamps to attach the tailpipe to the engine mount right
at the cowling. One clamp goes on the tailpipe itself, and the other on the
engine mount tubing. Both of mine on the engine mount (both sides) broke on
the way home; we discovered this when we had the cowling off to change the
oil. One clamp had departed the aircraft, and the other was held on on one
side only and flopping loose.

Garry at AMD said that was there to provide some extra support for the
tailpipe. My mechanic said that he didn't see why it was there, and he
recommended just leaving it off; Garry agreed that that would work fine.

In the certified world this would be easy. You would have to fix it. I'm not sure what the rules are on a factory built LSA. In the WW Corvair conversion there is no support for the exhaust pipes. And I've seen many certified planes that don't have supports. What I'd do is look at a couple of C-150s that have the same engine and see if they have them. I'm pretty sure you can get away without them. The O-200 is nothing if not overbuilt.

One thing that would change my opinion on that is if there are mufflers on the ends of the pipes. If there are that is some additional weight hanging out on the end that might need support.

Either way you go I'd tell AMD to send you some new mounts just to have no matter if you use them or not. That is the advantage of buying a new airplane.

Hey Jim: congratulations on your new XL. I recommend that you attach
the tail pipes to the engine mount using a rubber piece (like a piece
of tire)
We use this on Alon aircraft to reduce the vibration and increase the
longevity.
