Starter blowing a fuse

Hello list members.



I need some help from you experts on the list for a problem my friend  

has been experiencing when he starts his Rotax 912.

He has been blowing a fuse on the master when he starts the engine.

Does anyone have a solution the this problem?

His plane is a Kitfox 3 and the starter has a solenoid and a 30 amp  

fuse on the master.

All ideas would be very appreciated.

Hi! Johann

My master system solenoid is protected by a fuse but the starter system

is wired direct since in a previous installation I too blew a 70amp

fuse!

The starter amperage call is massive.

The Rotax starter contactor is rated at 75 amps, and the current draw 

can briefly reach the 100-120 amp mark, so a 30 amp fuse is definitely 

too small. If your friend really wants to fuse the starter wires, an ANL 

rated at at least 150 amps is in order, but he'll be adding weight for 

no real gain.

There is usually no fuse on the fat wire feeding the starter motor on 

light airplanes. The rationale is that the battery is not able to 

overheat the big wire in case of fault. Rotax starter runs well with an 

AWG 6 wire.

Of course the other wires should be protected by a fuse or a 

circuit-breaker.

   You do not indicate whether or not this is a issue that just came up or is it a new installation.

 If it is a new installation you might check to insure you have a good ground to the engine. Make sure all contacts are clean and tight.

   Has the starter been check for proper operation. When power is applied does it engage the ring gear and then stall (blow the fuse), or does it not even engage. Might need some grease.

Thank you all for the help. George, the installation is not new. This problem just came up a few days ago. The starter has not been inspected and I will have him check all ground connections.

Not sure when the fuse blows, after the ring engages or  immediately. I will need to get more precise information from my friend before we can isolate the cause for the problem.

When I have more information, I will write again.
