I just picked up 2 core engines. With 2, I figure I will end up with one good one. LOL!! My problem is that both are froze up. After taking the top cover off of both, one looks pretty clean, just has a lot of rust in the cylinders. The other has some rust in the crank area, but not to much. The heads and cylinders are really on there. What have people used to deal with this kind of rust. I can't get to all the connecting rod bolts without turning the engine. Any help would be great. Also, I want to remove the studs from the case. How are people doing this. I tried the double nut idea, but both nuts turn.

Larry,
I used mystery oil and put the engine in a tub from Lowe's and just kept it soaked. Mystery oil seems to be the best I've tried but I think just getting oil to the frozen parts is what helped the most. Just be patient and don't force anything. I have wanted to try just soaking it in kerosene in the tub I bought but haven't had any more engines to try it on. I'm sure there are 100 ways to do it so everyone chime in.

Larry,
There has been a lot of talk about an electrolysis method which I am not terribly familiar with, but there have been several people raving about it.
A Google search on "electrical rust removal" or "Electrolytic rust removal"
should produce some results.
Jeff, you might want to try this too because it is quicker than just soaking them.
This method is supposed to break down the rust into a slippery mud and then it just rinses off.
I haven't had the need to try it yet but I have heard it works great.
It's worth a shot.

I saw that to but that's all I need to do right now is start making something else. As I said right now I have no cores but if I get a bad one I might try it. It doesn't seem to difficult.

Thanks, I will do some research on that and might give it a try.

I used a lot of PB Blaster (nasty smelling penetrating oil) and a torch. But my engine wasn't locked up...
You don't want to remove the head studs unless you absolutely have to. I had to remove about 10 of mine due to total rust of the threads (was a salty Minnesota core). Regarding the head nuts - I had to drill and chisel about half of mine off due to the nuts and studs rusting into a single mass.
Regarding the electrolytic removal - I set that up too. It's largely "line of site" - won't do you much good for getting rid of rust that's deep inside, like on the connecting rods or rings inside the engine, for example.

I had great luck with the deep down rust. The pistons came right out of the jugs after I finished. I put 10 amps and let it sit overnight. I could not even budge the thing before that..
