Hi all - my UK-built Kitfox Model II is still going through scrutiny by the
FAA and one of the things that has come up is that it cannot display the UK
registration markings now that it has N-number markings. That sounds simple
enough except that the letters are HUGE (see attached photo), on both sides
of the fuselage, and take up most of the underside of the port wing. And are
painted on, not decals.

The paint is in really good shape and I am not keen on re-painting the whole
thing. I proposed just "removing" the "G-" marking and coming up with a
clever reverse-acronym meaning for "BSMO" and the FAA seems ok with that "as
long as the markings cannot be mis-construed as a UK registered aircraft".

So my options appear to be - find a color match for the yellow and paint
over the "G-" in all 3 places, although a spray can of Rustoleum is the
level of my painting expertise. Another thought was to get 3 of those nifty
Kitfox logo decals and put them over the G-.

So my question to the listers is - where does one get large Kitfox logo
decals? And - anyone have any better idea(s)?

I don't know if you guys have trim line auto decals in your neck of the woods. Make your own grapohic and e-mail it as an attachment to your nearest auto detailer and by the time you get to their office you should have your decals. A single coat of yellow dope, the same kind as the base colour will help hide the letters.

I’m thinking you could have decals made up of the Stars and Stripes to cover the G-B That leaves you with SMO (Small Mighty & Ornery!)

I'm going to include a couple of pictures of decals I had made up for my baby. I think the total cost was less thatn $10 CDN and that was when out buck was worth a lot less than it is today.

This is what the decal I e-mailed to the graphics company looked like (reduced in size a bit for the dial up guys)

That's the best suggestion yet Noel, and I see Aircraft Spruce has quite a few at
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/flagplacards.php

I also found some actual Kitfox logo decals at http://www.chiefaircraft.com/airsec/Aircraft/Decals/Logos.html that look interesting.

Where would I get yellow dope to match what's on the plane? And black (black should be easy to match!)?

You only need to know the brand of the finish on there now... If it is PolyFibre then you can get the Polyfibre or Aerothane finish. If it is Randolph then all you need is the butrate dope the same colour. Same thing for Hi-Pec and most of the other finishes... The first thing to do is to find out what is there now. The original owner or the guy you bought it from may be able to help.

The Decals are opaque so they can be applied directly over the existing finish without using any dope or paint. Heck you won’t even need to sand the finish to apply a decal. Check out the places that make graphics for cars and or trucks.

I have used the decals to put registration markings on a couple of planes I worked on. It is just too easy and the marks always go on straight and square.

Noel

How about just tell the printers you need the white BTW that’s close to the original training colours.

That's great info Noel, and I'm giving that logo below some serious consideration.

The guy I bought the airplane from doesn't know details about the paint and the original builder is uncontactable. However my Owner's Manual specifies "Stits Poly-Tone or Aero-Thane" and AircraftSpruce offers both finishes in a variety (unfortunately!) of yellows. I have ordered their free Poly-Fiber Color Chart and hope to make a safe match with that.

Thanks again for your help, I probably wouldn't have found this info without it. And wish me luck with first-time spraying!

Bob,
I would talk to Dan at Spencer Aircraft for PolyFiber products 800-424-1160. He is really good with the stuff and a real person to talk to. The PolyFiber factory at www.polyfiber.com will custom match colors for you but it is my understanding it costs $200 which includes the formula and the first gallon of paint. Then if you need more go to Spencer.

Thanks Don, I have ordered ($free) the PolyFiber color chart from
AircraftSpruce and hope to be able to get a good match from that and then
order the minimum paint required from them.

I'll keep this info in case that doesn't work out though.

Bob,
Just for info, PolyFiber does not mix the colors at the factory anymore - the individual dealers do. It is just like buying paint from Home Depot, all they get is the base mixture and then the dealer adds the color tint. I am told Spencer does a better job of this than ACS (but this just may be a rumor I am spreading!)

Thanks Don. I'm still waiting for the color chart from ACS and I hope there
is a good match on there for my airplane. If the paint they send me doesn't
match the color chart - it goes back!

Bob: don't forget the paint on yoru plane is a couple of years old and may
have oxidized or changed slightly since it was applied. If you are into a
bit of a paint job I'd mask the plane off along obvious separation points
like the upper and lower chines. That way any slight differences in tone
won't be obvious.
