Ladies & Gentlemen,
I have just received our first 4340 billet crankshaft!
I am proud to say that the workmanship and the finish are top notch and the dimensions are all perfect.
Our next step is to send a material sample to an independent laboratory for a material analysis. This will confirm the alloy and the quality of the alloy.
Assuming it passes the laboratory tests we will have the strongest Corvair crankshaft available any where!

Here is a picture of the Crankshaft.
Thanks,
Brady

Looks good Brady. What radius sizes did you get in the rod and main journals?

Ron,
The Radii are .090". This is typical of High performance Crankshafts so I thought it should be good for us. I can increase the radii if necessary but I don't think it will be.

Thanks,
Brady

So (by any measure you choose) how much "stronger" do you think your new
cranks are compared to a recently nitride (as opposed to nitride by GM in
the 60's) factory crank. Will you be nitriding yours too? Do you think your
new cranks will still need a fifth bearing?

Craig,

These crankshafts are Plasma Nitrided.
And can be Cryogenicly treated as well as an option.
Mine will get cryo-ed.
They are approximately 25% Stronger than a NEW OEM crankshaft that is Nitrided, by conservative estimates.

The necessity of a fifth bearing is a personal decision and application should be taken into consideration.

I am going to fly this crankshaft without a fifth bearing.

Strength is not the only issue.
Fatigue Life is the issue.
All crankshafts have a finite number of cycles until failure.
These crankshafts have 0 cycles on them.
How many cycles does your GM crankshaft have on it?

Brady
