As I turned base to final on my last leg home from Michigan to Virginia for
the 4th of July weekend, my flaps malfunctioned in a very interesting way...
I was able to drop my flaps 2/3rds on base leg. After I turned final, I
depressed the switch to drop the last 1/3rd, but nothing happened. I cycled
the switch a couple times, but the flaps would not come down any further.
I flipped the switch up, and the flaps started to retract, so I immediately
stopped and tried to depress the switch in the down position again, but the
flaps would still not come down. I tried a couple times, but no luck. So I
kept the flaps where they were until after landing.
The flaps retracted fine after landing, but would not come back down on the
ground.
A local guy believes it to be a problem with the lower limit switch. This
is the second time in the last six months this has happened, and the last
time the local guy said the same thing, but obviously he did not fix the
root cause of the problem.
WSY??? What's the most likely culprit? Where should I look first?

Could be the limit switch or maybe just a wire that came off the terminal at
the flap switch or at the limit switch.

Could be but my guess would be the flap motor. Electrical motor has
overtemp switch. When they start to wear out they overheat during operation
- temp switch cuts off motor. Minutes later, it cools off enough to operate
again for a little while anyway.
I've had this happen on two different planes.

You are absolutely correct. I'd have to go over the wiring diagram to see what the failure modes would be. The only thing that would stop the flaps from going down, WRT the limit switches, would be something jamming the limit switch prior to the down limit. If the switch appears to be OK, then it's something else. By-the-way, the switches fail open, not closed. So if the switch failed, check to see if something jammed into the switch. Not likely, but, you never know.
