Has anyone successfully installed the Kuntzleman Streamline Combo nav/strobe lights on a 601XL, and do the rear-facing white nav lights meet the FAA approved light pattern? I was originally going to install the round nav light in the rudder, but it adds more wiring and extra weight, so I’d rather go with the combo system if I can. I like the Kuntzleman system because it is lightweight, has a single strobe power pack in the fuselage, and only draws about 3 to 4 amps total, including the strobes and LED nav lights. However I can’t figure out how to verify whether the rear-facing white LED lights would meet the FAA approved light pattern. I haven’t started on my wings yet, (I will be starting soon), but when I have looked at the shape of the wingtip on other XLs, it appears that the light mounting pads are forward of the outermost curvature of the wingtip, so I am concerned that the wingtip will block the view to the rear. If I understand it correctly, the white lights must be visible 70 degrees to either side of a longitudinal line through the center of the A/C at a distance of 1200 feet behind the A/C, but there is no practical way for me to check this.
Any help would be appreciated.

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Dave,

I have installed the Kuntzleman Combo nav/strobe lights on my wing tips and I had the same questions. I solved the problem by making custom fiberglass wingtips that move the light back so that the wing won't block the white light. See attached pictures.

I pulled this off the Whelen website and use it when I was designing the placement of the AeroFlash units I am using. I fabed up a light mount at the furthest point out on the wing taking into consideration angle of the Horner tips.

See it here:

The whelen PDF is attached at the forum.

Hi Terry,
Thanks for the pics. I agree that it looks like they would be easily visible from the rear on the Jabiru, but I think the Jabiru wingtips are a lot more squared off than the 601XL. With the 601XL, the light pads appear to be ahead of the outermost curvature of the wing. I came across some notes I took last year when I was at AirVenture, where I had determined after looking at completed 601XLs that I would probably need a light in the tail. I may ask at the ZAC booth to see what they say, but right now I am thinking about getting the Kuntzleman triple magnum system, which now has an optional round tail light with a white LED and strobe combination. It may not quite fit in the existing fiberglass fairing, but I am thinking about making a custom fairing myself, (Jeff Small provided details for how to do a fiberglass mold and layup). Besides, I like the idea of a third strobe – you can never be too visible to other traffic. I’ll decide when I am at AirVenture in 2 weeks.

Hi Dave
A couple of picts of combo lights. I was at the Arlington Flyin today and
noticed the lights on the Jabiru LSA A/C. They are the GS-Air/Kunzleman
variety. Take a look at the attached photos. If they are legal on the
Jabiru, I cannot believe they could not be mounted with at least as good
rearward visibility on the 601XL.

Ron,
Can I ask - did you use the stock ZAC supplied wingtip structure, including the fiberglass fairing / light pad provided in the kit? I could certainly be wrong, but when I looked at that structure from behind, I could not see how the light would be visible from behind no matter where it was mounted on the light pad of the fiberglass fairing.
Thanks,
Dave

Gentlemen, I have just used a CAD system and drew up what you are trying to do.
It works with lots of clearance if the lights are at the furthest point out
and as high on the wing tip as you can get them. I also made mine perpendicular
to earth so there will be good coverage above and below. I am using the AeroFlash
units but the solution is still the same.

I'm not using the fiberglass wing tips but if it, the light base, protrudes beyond the furthest and highest outboard point of the wingtip, you will have great light coverage.

Hope that's clear, I know what I mean anyway, do you? Smile

Hi Ron,
Yes, I understand what you are saying, but I believe it would require modifications to the stock fiberglass wingtips in order to accomplish this. Smile

Dave

Dave,

What are the length and width of the base of the light you want to use?

What is the length and with of the light mounting base on the wing tip from Zenith?

If the base of the wingtip from zenith is short in either direction you can
easily build up the areas with more fiberglass.

I do recall you saying you have little skills, well here is an opportunity to
learn by doing. Most all of this stuff is an improvisation keeping structural
integrity and safety foremost in your actions. The light mounting is not a
structural part other than it holds the light fixture and deflects air.

Give it some thought about how you want it to look, draw it up if you can.
There is a lot of satisfaction in in creating and executing your own design
changes. Get with your EAA tech consoler and talk it out, I am sure they will have some suggestions and may even show you how to do what you want. I think the EAA motto is "See, Learn, Do". I think you can see what you want, now learn how, then do it.

Feel free to ask more questions,

Hi Ron,

Thanks for your reply.

Length and width are not an issue. The mounting base is much larger than
the base of these small light fixtures. However, the standoff from the
wingtip is an issue.

To your point, it is my plan to study the possibility of building up the
mounting base on the wingtip fairings when I look at completed aircraft at
Oshkosh. However if it will require an overly long standoff, which would
look bad and potentially interfere with the aerodynamics of the Hornier
wingtips, then I will opt to install the third tail light instead.

By the way, I will probably get the satisfaction of creating and executing
my own design in either case, because if I go with the tail light, I will
probably have to custom make a rudder fairing. Jeff Small was good enough
to share his techniques for doing fiberglass molds and layups, and is
answering any questions I have - "See, Learn, Do".

Regards,
Dave
