Drove to the airport this morning intending to fly, but the weather here in the Florida Keys wouldn't allow it. So, I got into a project. As all 601 flyers know, space for stuff you need in flight is at a premium. That control stick is sexy, but it doesn't allow you to have much even on your lap! I haven't yet found a good place for a cup holder, but I have made some improvements. I posted a video on my blog showing what I did to try and optimize in-flight storage room with a lightweight 4-drawer cabinet. Next step, some bungee cord hold-downs. See http://mostlyflying.com

Frank,
That's a great idea. I'm organizationally impaired and can use this!

FULL DISCLOSURE: I am not a builder and I have never pulled a rivet. I've seen it done out in the EAA tents at Sun N' Fun, but have never done it myself.
QUESTION: So, what is the easiest way for a rube like me to attach some padeyes like these to the floor of the baggage compartment? I know that your answer is blind rivets, but I have never drilled for or pulled a rivet. Is it physically possible for a 60+ year old guy to access the underside of the floor of the baggage compartment from the inspection hole in the belly 601 for the purpose of getting locknuts onto the padeye screws?
I believe your answer will be.. "Find an EAA member who knows how to pull a rivet." But, can I get at the floor of the baggage compartment all the way to the back of the seats from the inspection hole? Hmmm.. I do have an agile 6 year old grandson.. but the airplane is full of Corrosion-X. Might make his mom testy and I already get him (and me) into enough trouble.

You should be able to get to where you need to get to attach those either from the bomb bay inspection hole or from behind the seats.
To install you can get some simple pull rivets from the hardware store and an hand puller that is probably right beside it on the rack.
I'm assuming you bought an already completed plane. If this isn't the case and and you just haven't gotten started building yet you will know how to do it 8 ways to Sunday before you are to that point.

I really like those. Where did you get the boxes?
There has been no size or location testing but I've been planning on mounting a couple of these from Cabelas.

This is strictly a proof-of-concept idea, but here is an elbow rest/storage/drink holder box I fabricated. It seemed that with my seat cushion arrangement, that there was a blank spot between my elbow and the seal back channel where a bottle of water could sit. After I am flying, I will test fly the box and possibly refine the dimensions and either keep or scuttle the drink holder.
By the way, the family has been put on strict notice that bottles of water will the only drinks ever allowed in the airplane.
Good luck,

"Where did you get those boxes?"
Gig's question is referring to the Aviation In-Flight Storage boxes shown in THIS VIDEO
They are from the Aviation Section of The Container Store and they are shown RIGHT HERE.

Frank,
How did you secure that cabinet to keep it from sliding around?

No actually I was asking about Alex's carbon fiber looking boxes that were pictured in his post.
So Alex can you make those for sale? I assume they are pretty light. Can one order specific sizes?

Please do and come to think of it if you already have the mold I'd be fine with the size you did.
