I acquired (always a good word when paying more money than the gut can
stand) an IO540 thru Vans during the sale. The offer included free
shipping.

Well, it all worked well and the engine was delivered without charge.
However, a week later, I was invoiced by USF Holland for a $94 "liftgate
service delivery" charge. Hmmmmm.

I'm thinking that few if any builders would ever be able to take
delivery other than by "liftgate". I don't have a forklift or a loading
dock, do you?

I called Holland and got no where. I called Vans and they pointed me at
Lycoming. After faxing the invoice a few times and a little back and
forth, Lycoming agreed that I should not be charged and will take care
of it.

I personally think it was a "gee with fuel prices hitting the roof let's
make sure we squeeze revenue from anywhere we can" charge from the
shipping company. I sympathize. However, if it had been a legitimate
charge, they would have insisted on acceptance before operating the lift
gate.

In any case, everyone did what they should have. Thanks Vans and
Lycoming for getting it resolved.

I have had all my 'kits' shipped 'Customer Pickup' at the shippers dock.

That way there are no extra fees and I don't have to worry about being somewhere at a specific time. They load the crates on the trailer and I am off to the hanger. Parts of my fuselage and finishing kits (ordered and shipped at the same time) stayed on the trailer for over a month. I just knocked the crates apart and inventoried them right there.

My first empcone kit arrived on a semi and it was for me and the driver to "unload" those two heavy boxes--wasn't easy.

Since then, instead of having the shipping company home deliver, I rent a UHaul RT trailer and go pick it up from the local shipping facility. You can then unpack the kit while the box is still on the RT trailer at your leisure. Rental for the RT trailer is less than $30 per 24 hours and you usually save about $80 to eliminate the home delivery portion from the freight company. I've done this with all the kits following the empcone and it has worked out really well.

This may not have helped since you were not aware of the "lift-gate service delivery" charge, but something to consider. Oh, the FWF kit is pretty small in comparison and I think came via UPS.
