Andy,

Thank you for your response.  I have taken so much prodding by everyone I know about the fact I am still building my Series V Speedster, and it's into it's 14th year.  It's nice to know there is someone else out there who's got me beat, thank you, thank you!  I have Serial Number 1 of the Model V and it looks like this is the year to complete it (maybe ).  Like you I have a wife is totally supportive and she says the same thing your wife does.  "Why don't you go work on the plane and get it done."  Fortunately, she's not only my wife, but my best friend.  Couldn't have done this without her support.  She gave up her dining room, family room, basement and garage to see this plane going through the build process.

I believe I've been on the Kitfox list for almost as long as it's been around.  The list has had it's rough times, but overall it's been a good experience.  Guy has done a super job stepping up and managing the action.  I hope he stays the course.

Is any one going to be at Oshkosh this year?  Did I miss that thread?  The mind is a terrible thing to waste!

Rick, I thought I might have the record for longest build time for a 5 (9 years-my original goal was 2 years-but life seems to get in the way sometimes. But I may have longest Phase 1 test time-over a year now!!)

David,

You, my friend, are a speed builder relative to me.  Good thing I bought the quick build:-)  I'll do my best to let you have the record for the longest phase 1 test time, but you never know.  Do you have specs for plane?  Cruise speed, Empty weight, etc?  Going out to the hangar now to press on before leaving for Oshkosh.  By the way, where is Woodstock, GA?  I'm near Daytona Beach?  Are you going to Oshkosh?

Rick, the plane came in at 833 lbs. My problem with long test period was high oil temps and a vibration at high RPM's, and the plane is 50 miles from home. I did a bunch of short flights, maybe 15 at no more than 30 minutes trying different mods to lower oil temps. I had pitched my prop for 5200 static. Some one suggested it might be too flat, so I repitched it for lower rpm. Still need to adjust, but I'm only getting 4800 at takeoff. However oil temps dropped dramatically, speed increased, and rate of climb increased. I'm seeing consistently 105 to 110 mph (no pants, but strut fairings), and 1100 fpm climb at density altitudes of 2100 common in summer here. But you know I have more fun cruising around the North Georgia mountains at 60. I plan on slowly changing pitch to see what happens. (by the way it is a warp drive tapered tip, I believe 72 in,) Ironically my DAR assigned me 25 hours. I questioned this, but he said I had an approved prop and engine combination. Most people I have discussed this with say I'm legal after 25 hours, but I'm not convinced. So I'm taking it to 40 hours. I have about thirty and no that I have most issues solved it should go real quick.

Yes I'm going to OSH. Driving up Sunday and leaving Thursday. Woodstock is 35 miles NE of Atlanta.

David,

I have the same engine/prop combination so I'm finding this particularly interesting.  I also have the bump cowl and the Earl's oil cooler which is upfront under the engine, partially hidden by the cowl.  Is yours similar?   High oil temp seems to be a common issue on early flights.  I test flew my friend's Model IV (40 hour test period) but we had EGT problems.  Turns out the probes were too close to the exhaust valves, we moved them and the readings became normal - there never was a problem with the temps themselves.   We expected oil temp problems, but it didn't seem to be an issue for us - we were lucky I guess.  It sounds like your airplane is performing real good.

I'll be at Oshkosh the whole time.  If you make it to Aeroshell square look for the Aeroshell coach (an ugly old RV) parked right next to the road parallel to the flight line, and ask around for me.  I'l be there quite often, especially late in the afternoon each day.  I'd like to say hey!

Later,

David, have you checked to see if your tach is reading correctly? There have been many cases on this list where people were chasing problems only to find out that the tach was the problem.

Rick, I have the smooth cowl with the Earl's cooler.

I'll look you up at OSH.

Yeah, Deke, I have the Rotax tack and calibrated it when first started. I also installed a Tiny Tack temporarily to be sure. But left it in anyway.
