I have a 701/912/amphib with a warp three blade which has given me good
service for over 500 hrs. I adjust the Warp at 8.5' for general flying and
10.5' for long Xcountry flights. I'm thinking of trying an Ivo in-flight
adjustable to eliminate the required changing of pitch.
I've read some negative comments on the net concerning Ivo propellers and
wondered if anyone has had good results with the 912/Ivo combination?
Please reply on the list or directly to me.

The Ivo is a great prop except for one thing: the stainless steel leading edge tape. You have to replace it often, and it starts to crack after about 10 hours. I don't have anything to compare to but I bet some other props are smoother running, if they have leading edge protection permanently installed. You can run without tape, but the leading edge will erode if you fly in rain or snow. The Ivo prop itself is very strong and durable, super easy to adjust, and though I have no experience with the in-flight adjustable I think it works fine. A friend of mine has one for sale (just the adjustable motor and linkage, not the prop).

I had an IVO inflight adjustable prop on my 601. It gave good performance and the advantage of adjustable was great.
The only problem I had was that the slip ring, which was aluminum, would corrode between flights (very quickly) and wear the brushes out rapidly. I finally gave up and bought an Arplast inflight adjustable which has performed really well.

Carl,
I've never had an IVO in-flight adjustable but did have GSC (made in BC, Canada) in-flight adjustable on my Titan Tornado 912UL. Instead of electrical adjustment, the GSC is purely mechanical with a vernier control in the cockpit that looks and operates just like a constant speed prop control but without the governor. I liked the mechanical system because it was simple and you could make precise adjustments by knowing how many turns from take-off to cruise. In my case it was exactly 4 turns between take-off, landing, initial climb pitch and cruise pitch. The prop blades are beautiful wood with hard-as-rock urethane leading edges machined into the blade with nothing to replace. If I was not in the LSA mode now, I would have one on my Allegro.

Hey Carl,
I'm running an IVO Ultralight IFA on my my 912S. I am thrilled with the
performance. You do get rid of the SS tape first thing, that's easy. And apply the 3M Clear rock guard and your're good to go. I bought mine from John McBean at Kitfox Aircraft since that's what I fly, and he has a thru the hub controller that will last about 5 times longer than the stock
IVO. I believe the numbers we see on climb and cruise put this combination at the top of the heap. If you're not too concerned about weight and have a thicker wallet, the IVO medium will give you a smoother start up and shut down. Have fun.

Where did you get the 3M tape from? I've looked around and can't find it.

Sorry, I've been gone all day. I got my initial batch from Warp drive
(hey?) and then 20 yds. of it after doin' a bunch of Google. Let me go down to my hanger and I'll get back to you with that supplier. It may be tomorrow.

Craig,
I found my receipt for the 3M Scotch film. I got it from SRI Racing
and it's really quite a cheap way to buy it. But you have to shape it yourself. This is 8 mil instead of 6 mil. which I'm excited about trying. If you want to wait, I'm finishing up my annual condition inspection and will be the test dummy for this 8mil tape before you buy. I don't expect any surprises, I believe it will protect a little better.

I am interested in this tape. I tried some tape, and it looked good and went on well, but quickly became abraided and torn, and even started to slip a little off the end of the blade. If this 8 mil tape works for you I'll switch to it from the stainless. Its a good prop, but that tape drives me crazy!!

When I first got my plane it had a three blade GSC that I didn’t know was time-xed. I was having a bit of a problem with abrasion at the tips. It seemed to draw water through the prop regardless of what I tried (floats). Almost every day I was filling holes with epoxy paste and dressing it back to shape. In desperation I tried short strips of bicycle inner tube which had the edges chamfered very thin to adhere to the prop very similar to a de-icing boot. That worked very well as the water just bounced off the rubber but the rubber would come off after about a five hour flight. The rubber was light enough that no additional vibrations were noticed. What has come to my mind is just to coat the last inch or so of the leading edges of the blades with a thin coat of either contact rubber cement or RTV. Appllied thin en0oo0ugh it would protect the leading edge without adding enough weight to cause vibrations... and it is easily replacable.

What do you mean by "you have to shape it yourself"?

Hugh:
The rock guard tape from SRI comes on a roll, so you have to cut it to the shape you want instead of buying precut pieces from Warp drive or
another supplier.
