After three years building and five years flying my RV-8, I have decided to
move into Light Sport aviation.

I will always cherish the memories of RV’s and all they have to offer.

After spending months researching Builder Liability Issues, I have decided
to donate Cappy’s Toy to an Aviation Museum.

The museum has offered to create an Experimental Aircraft Section featuring
Cappy’s Toy. It is heartwarming to know Cappy’s Toy will forevermore be
representing Experimental Aviation, and that I have found a good home for
her.

The museum has agreed to accept Cappy’s Toy without the engine, engine
accessories, NAV/COM GNC 300XL, transponder GTX 327, autopilot Trio Avionics
EZ Pilot and 5 point airline type seat belts.

The expected delivery date is September 15, 2008.

In addition to a tax deduction, the sale of these items will enable me to
re-coup some of the losses incurred from not selling the airplane outright.

If you are interested in a proven complete functioning power plant package
with less than 450 hours for your project, or any of the other items, please
give me a call.

Cappy,

Since you're moving into Light Sport, have you considered a Light Sport RV?
Jay Kurtz at Lakeland South (FL) has developed mods for an RV 9A which
qualify it for Light Sport status. He is a DAR too.

Hi Gary,

I have not decided on which LSA yet, and am looking for a partner this time around. But no matter what if it is experimental my name won't be on the name plate as builder. I think I'm looking for something high wing this time around.

I'm sure you are heart broken to see it go, but at least it's going to a good home... Best of luck with your next project.

I gotta tell you, Cappy. I don't think anyone saw this coming. Care to share
what spooked you so bad about selling Cappy's Toy?

HI David,

I wouldn't call it spooked as much as concerned. It's called builder liability. You can mitigate it but you can't avoid it.
Feel free to call if you want all the details.

Garry,

I would like to read about his LSA mods for the -9A, could you send me a
link.

Call me a doubting Thomas because that is what I am.

My -9 (tail dragger tip-up) is the lightest combination, according to Van's
and without paint and the small engine (O-290-D2) my empty weight is 990
lbs. To fit under the LSA 1320 lb weight limit you would have to come in
two to three hundred pounds under that.

Say he used a Rotax 912S, which comes in around 140 lbs installed vs. 264
for my engine, that reduces the empty weight by 124 lbs to 866. Even then,
after filling the tanks (228 lbs), you have just 226 lbs worth of useful
load.

Sure that will qualify as an LSA but it might not be useful.

There are much better LSA's out there that worth looking at than a highly
modified RV-9A and I suspect, correction, I know Cappy is looking at all of
his options.

Cappy, your move out of your -8 has to be a tough one but as you know, there
are so many other fun aircraft out there that qualify as LSA's, both old and
new, I'm sure you will have a blast and with much less headaches, cost, etc.
Let me know if you need help with Cappy's Toy.

Bill

Sorry Bill, I don't think Jay Kurtz has a website or any published info on
his LSA RV-9A. I believe he built his as challenge to himself. His plane
was at Sun N'Fun, and the Sebring LSA Expo. He is more than willing to
spread the wealth but isn't out marketing his design.

What I do know is that he is using either an O-290 or an O-235 engine.
Definitely not a Rotax. He has minimal paint, minimal instruments, minimal
interior and I believe among other things he is using titanium gear legs.
Lots of other lightening things too.

As to a contact, I'd suggest emailing the South Lakeland Airpark (X49). Jay
is the FBO operator, such as it is. (Small airport).

Best regards,

Garry Stout
