Mine cost me nothing. The FAA guy drove from the Grand Rapids FSDO to my
place in NE Michigan (about 4+ hours) and spent about 1 hour, most of it
with the paperwork. He was very nice and helpful. No problems. However,
that was in May 2000 so things have probably changed greatly since then. It
appears that with some of these DARs it's become more of a business for
profit than a service.

Mine was free too. That was in 2004. Grand Rapids FSDO couldn't schedule me for several months so I called Detroit. They scheduled within 3 weeks. Inspector drove 4 hours each way, spent less than an hour with me, mostly asking about golf courses in the area. I'm sure his sticks were in the trunk. Your tax dollars at wotk. Wink

Off to OSH tomorrow morning.

I think I'd rather pay with my tax dollars than $600 + per hr + expenses.... Sad
Anyone know/is a DAR willing to come to Wrightsville Pa? Please?

Doesn't anyone fly their plane to the DAR's location? Seems like that would go along way to proving the aircraft airworthy and save money. :>)

Can one legally fly the airplane before receiving the airworthiness certificate?

No, I was just stirring the pot. I have a friend who has a newly built Legal Eagle and he is waiting on the DAR to come to Las Cruces, NM from Albuquerque, NM. I have been kidding him about flying it to get it inspected.

You could try for a ferry permit. Though I doubt it. Never know. Larry

For a lot of us DARs it is a business. That is hoy I make my living.
lets do not forget, we also pay taxes. in fact about 55% of what I charge goes to the state and uncle sam.
That does not include the $1200 or so each year for the required FAA training.
Also, when there is an accident the first to get called is the DAR who has to hear the FAA monday morning QB every detail of the certification.

Getting my airplane certified was still cheaper than having my car AC repaired
gust a few days ago.

Thanks for that perspective Dave. I have decided not to question my DAR's
fees, as I said he is well respected by everyone I spoke to. At the moment I
am waiting for him to get confirmation from the CAA (UK FAA) that my plane
has never had an Airworthiness Certificate (one of the requirements for
getting Light Sport). I had already gotten this information for him but he
needs it first hand to file with the documentation. So far he seems to be of
the attitude "do whatever needs to be done", and I may not find that in a
DAR who doesn't do it for a living. Of course there are those parts for his
old Fleet biplane he is restoring... No doubt soon to be paid for by me!
Hope he at least gives me a ride in it... Wink

Well stated David. It would do many of us well to think about that. Larry
(who is about to have his a/c fixed.
