I am talking about using a 6 gallon gas can. The only can that will fit between the gas tanks and frame on my plane is a 1 gallon can. Of course I do not use a 1 gallon can to fill my plane.
I fill my plane by putting the 6 gallon can on top of the wing gap seal and using a siphon hose with a pvc cutoff valve added to it so I can easily control the fuel flow as the tank gets full. It works great but it is aggravating having to lift nearly 40 lbs over my head each time and getting gas on me while switching tanks. I also have the end of the hose running into a mr. Funnel to keep trash out of the tanks.

Grant,
I also fill my MK III from 6 gallon Cans, but my solution is kind of backwards from yours. I am not the strongest guy in the world, I would not want to be lifting 6 gallons over my head either... I put a 6 foot free standing ladder ( Taking it up with me as I climb a couple steps ) by the cockpit door, and set the gas jug on top of the ladder. I have a MR Funnel that I attached to the TOP of a long hose, I put the bottom of the hose in the fuel tank, and go up a couple steps on the ladder with the funnel in my hand, and just tip the jug so that gas pours directly from the jug into the MR Funnel ( Not using spout ), the tube and the gas runs down the long hose directly into the tank. I run the hose through the top loop of the shoulder harness to keep it from moving as I fill the plane. This system is fairly easy to deal with, and has worked well for me for over 2 years now.
My flying buddy got this nifty metal hand gas pump that he mounted to a15 gallon free standing can from Northern Tools, its a sweet setup that I like and not to expensive. But the ladder and MR Funnel setup on the top of the hose has been working so well I have just not been motivated to buy and setup what my friend has. Using the MR Funnel, I have never seen any contamination in my fuel.

I don't have the vast knowledge base as some.
I use a Super Siphon and like it a lot. Like JP, you need a ladder to get the can above the tanks. A few shakes and the siphon starts working. Simple, cheap, and reliable. Will empty a can 98%.
I carry it on xc flights that may require fueling from gas tanks. Easy to store and use.

I have a 5' length of tygon hose attached to my gas jug. I stick the
hose in the tank and flip
the jug up onto my shoulder. I can see the level come up between the
seats.
Fairly effortless and I'm 67+
The hose needs to be replaced soon because it gets stiff when the OAT
drops.
I haven't gotten much flying time this summer but this evening
couldn't be ignored.
I got .5 in buzzing around the neighborhood. Fun watching the heads
turn up to see whatever
that goofy looking contraption is. The corn is getting tall on both
sides of the strip so I have
to be careful to stay near the center. Those stalks can suck you in
if you start dragging a tip.

I use a Flo N Go siphon threaded into a 6 gallon gas can. The siphon has a
control handle much like the one on a pump at a gas station, with several
feet of tubing attached. Thus, it has the benefit of being regulate the
flow at the aircraft's fuel tank as the tank becomes full. I elevate the
gas can on top of a 4 foot step ladder and strap the can to the top step
with a quick release strap so it does not accidentally fall from the ladder.
A couple squeezes of the handle starts the siphon action and then it works
pretty much like a standard gas pump. I tried the company's Super flo
model, but exchanged it for the Maxflo model with increased flow rate.
That makes short work of it. I don't recall exact price, but believe it was
around $35-$40 new.

John,
Thats the same siphon I use. I added the pvc shutoff valve and more hose so it would easily reach into my tanks.
I like the ladder idea.

I also fill my MK III from 6 gallon Cans>>
Hi Mike.
is that the standard can in the US?. In the UK we use a 20 litre can which
is approx 5.28 US galls so it is a bit easier.
I uses an all plastic pump with a very short pumping action of the handle,
maybe only 3 or 4 inches but it works at a reasonable speed. It is also very
light and can be stowed easily. We also have one which uses the same clamping
action as the lid of a fuel can so one end of the line can be fixed
immovably to the can. This saves needing about seven hands., but it is a
much heavier job and the hose is more difficult to loop and stow away
A guy I saw last week had made a bracket to hold a funnel and he hung that
from the trailing edge of the wing and had enough height to lead a hose from
the funnel in through a hole in the side and into the tank.Lifting a fuel
can to the height of the trailng edge is not too onerous.
Just a thought
