Does anyone know if Zenith will continue to support the 601XL Zodiac?
For those of us who have only completed the tail and have the wing kit,
does anyone know if they will be compatible? In other words, can we
just upgrade the rear spar in the wing and then buy the fuselage kit?
Are they interchangeable?

Thanks in advance.

Of course they are going to continue to support the 601XL. Hell, they continue to support the HD and HDS.

As far as interchangeability my bet is no but I'd ask Zenith. One of the big differenced is the rudder so if you have already done that you will be missing one of the big changes.

As far as switching to the 650 from the 601XL keep this in mind. Since I bought my plans in 2002 there have been a number of updates and changes. In the whole every one of these changes has made the 601XL a better plane. And whole the 650 will take what has been learned in the 601XL it will still be a new plane and subject to a bunch more changes as the years go by.

Since you mention the rear spar I assume you are concerned with the accidents. I've seen nor read nothing to make me think the 650 is in anyway a response by Zenith to change anything to fix what may or may not be a problem. To support that you will note that they didn't replace the aileron cables with push rods which would be a easy and quickly added correction to what CH has cited as one potential problem, i.e. loose cables.

One other thing though. I'd definitely go with the new 650 canopy design on a 601XL if I hadn't already built that. And If I ever have to replace my canopy it will be with the new design.

Strike what I said about interchangeability between the 601XL and the 650. I just read the following in the Kitplane Blog.

Quote:
Well, what about the 601 XL you’ve completed (or are still completing)? No worries. Gebhardt told us, “We worked hard to make sure that the major portions that we changed were retrofittable for the XL. The rudder has been swept back for greater efficiency and a cleaner look. We changed a lot of little things to make it easier to build that aren’t necessarily obvious. They’ll reduce build time, and will remove confusion in reading the plans or looking at parts. It’s more streamlined and more clear.”

Thanks for posting that, Gig - Caleb also said there was more headroom with
the new canopy. I like the rollover protection, too.

I've been talking with Travis at Zenith while Caleb was in Oshkosh. Travis told me that the new 650 canopy WILL fit the 601 body, but you will have to remove a small portion of the fuselage top in the area right behind the seats (It will make it easier to access the luggage area). It will give you a better view from behind the aircraft if you look over your seats. That was the main reason for the change. It was driven from the European Specs from what I understand. Travis said they (Zenith) have not worked out the actual numbers as to what needs to be changed to use this in the 601 but they should know shortly. I would suspect they will put out a narrative on it when they know more.
Hope this helps.

Larry H

A question for anybody that has eye balled the 650XL. Did any one happen to note how the diagonal members of the roll over structure are attached to the airframe? Do they appear to fasten to the lower longerons? The arched shaped tubing looks like it's fastened to the upper longerons.

It is attached to the upper longerons about mid way in the baggage compartment.

The attached photos show some details (one from AMD, one from Oshkosh). The V tubes terminate at the upper longerons.

The hoop is still aluminum and rests on the upper longeron. The steel V supports the hoop at its top with a U-shaped saddle.
