Coming back from Grass Valley today, the CJ's engine suddenly began to run rough. Was level at 4500' for 30 minutes, 2000 RPM, 70 MM and leaned, as I have for several years, to 10 degrees rich of peak on my EGT gauge. Reduced power and enriched -- engine ran smooth. With engine running richer increased back to 70 MM -- still smooth. Checked mags. Both good. Leaned again to 10 degrees rich of peak and roughness returned. Enriched again and returned home. Did not check mags when running rough. Thoughts?
Note: I've never experienced the engine running rough when leaned. It will usually surge if too lean.
Thanks, Blitz
