How do you safety a hose clamp?

I have a multitude of hose clamps on my airplane, coolant, oil, and fuel
hoses. None of them are safetied. None have failed.

What kind of hose clamp failed on your engine? There are a multitude of
different makes and styles of hose clamps in use on airplanes, tractors,
trucks, cars, etc.

John,

Not on an aircraft engine. I have had problems with some on oil cooler
lines on VWs. Probably poor quality clamps.

Hi Steven G:

Thanks for the tip.

Why did you safety the hose clamps? Did you have a problem with one
loosening up?

Joe:

Don't think anyone has established a requirement for safety wiring hose
clamps. I looked and turned up zilch.

Preventing the screw from backing out of the clamp is not the problem, when
a hose pulls or is blown loose from a fitting. Compression and shrinkage is
the problem, which requires periodic retightening of the clamp and/or
replacing the hose.

Please tell us about your firewall. I don't have one.

Glad to tell you about my firewall it's just foward of my dash and my feet
.It's really neat, and a good idea keep's the heat out of the cockpit, not to
mention the bugs and rain, it also hold's the engine mount,AND that holes
the engine that turns the little (68") blades in the front of the aieplane
and makes it go, I don't know who thought of it ,but it is a good idea just
like safety wireing hose clamps, that's all I can tell you about my fire
wall ,If you don't under stand,I'll be glad to send pictures. Joe

har har, guess you stepped into that one John.....
This guy is from another universe.

I went to another fly in picnic today, breaking a record (for me)
Forecast to be windy, I brought along my ladyfriend for ballast
(don't tell her that)
Ground speed to: 40mph, great event with a considerable variety of
craft.
The folks there supplied chocks and bungees for gust locks and I
parked tail to the wind.
Nice brisk but smooth ride back but a scary struggle on short final,
bucking, dropping and climbing,
managing to stay out of the corn.

Think I'll stick to calmer air for a while.
BB
btw: ground speed return 90mph

Joe:

Thanks for the info on fire walls.

Most of the aircraft I fly have the prop on top or the rear of the fuselage.

Still looking and waiting for someone to give me a requirement to safety
wire hose clamps.

I have had a bunch of other things work loose or crack on my airplane but
never a hose clamp. I had a old cog belt redrive that was a pretty good
shaker and tester of anything that could work loose and I never had a hose
clamp work loose. Also if you get good hose I'm not sure one would come off
a fitting even without a hose clamp. Have your ever tried to remove a good
hose from a good fitting. It can't be done without making a slit in the
hose. No.... take the time to safety all your bolts, exhaust system, carb
boots etc. If you still NEED something to do go ahead and safety wire your
clamps.

Rick N:

This last 912ULS uses clampless oil fittings. Shove them on, after soaking
in boiling water, with a lot of effort. The blue oil line looks good and
will require a utility knife to remove when the time comes.
