I have a 912uls. Have a pre-heat and float charger. And am still having trouble with cold starting this engine.
What battery are you using with this engine? Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I've been using an Ultrabat 13. Used it with no problems on the 912ul, and now with the 912uls. Have started the uls
with temps as low as 30 degrees and it spins the engine just as well as at the warmer temperatures. Plus it's a
pretty small, light weight package.

Hi SJA and gang, is your trouble starting the 912 a "cranking issue" or a "not starting "issue? One thing I was going to through out is that the manual says that the throttle must be at "idle position for the "cold starting sequence" to be activated. (something to do with the carburetors)?

Thanks for the replys.
The battery I have is a motorcycle battery: has 300 cca (at) 70 degrees, but that goes south of course at colder temps. It's an "Extreme" brand. The battery box is small (3.5x 6.0 x 7.0H) ROtax manual says at least 16ah, this battery is 18ah The battery is new in Dec.
I know the ignition takes a lot of juice to spin (I dont have the HD starter) and that the engine has to go to 300rpm to start. When I try to start it, voltmeter says `13.9 or so. After the first or second crank, it drops to 10.5. And then we're done. This week Im going to jump the battery and see what happens.
Any further suggestions about brand of battery? Im looking at the Odyssey 680.
Thanks.

I am using the Odessey 680 and have no problems with cold weather starts. I am also using Mobile One motorcycle oil.

I just today got my replacement battery, an Xtreme Plus XP12-18 from Apex
Battery, a sealed gel cell, www.apexbattery.com. The cost including
shipping was $42.50.
Last Saturday when I went to go fly my Europa with a 912 ULS and hit the
button and it just went click. I jump started the A/C and ran it for 20
minutes then tried a start again on the battery with the same
results...click. The battery was five years old and hadn't given me a
moments trouble.
