while completely baning experimental aircraft from any airport is just a knee jerk reaction, you have to admit that the experimental aircraft comunity has a higher accident rate then the certified especially in the first hundred hours. this is due to several factors, that have been well documented.

The old manager of Las Vegas North, Gus Sabo, was killed in a Long
EZ that he built.

He flew VFR into IFR conditions in Baja California. Being a pilot
does not insure that one has good judgement.

I heard about a Velocity crashing into a house and killing the pilot
and two people in the house while trying to land at North Las
Vegas. It was the flight test period as the plane only had 5 hours
of flight time. I went on the Internet to find a little more
info. I was shocked to read the comments of the airport director.

According to Airport Director Randall Walker, this incident is the
worst air accident off the airport grounds in Las Vegas history. Now
for the first time, Walker is publicly calling for more local
control over what aircraft come in and out of airports.
Walker says the airport has no control over what aircraft fly in and
out -- there hasn't even been a risk assessment for what kind of
risks these experimental aircraft may pose. But he says he is going
to start lobbying to get Congress to change the law and allow
airports to have more control.
But again, Randall Walker says that these kinds of aircraft do not
belong in urban areas.

Prior to his appointment as the director of aviation, Walker was
assistant county manager for Clark County from 1996 to 1997. As
assistant county manager, he oversaw 12 county departments and
provided fiscal oversight for District Court, Justice Court, and all
of Clark County's elected officials. In 1995, Walker served as
director of the county's Department of Finance.

I read the complete bio and there was no indication of any aviation
experience. My first question is why do ANTI-AVIATION types, who
are not pilots and have no flying experience, rise up to get airport
director jobs? For example, the new director of airports for San
Bernardino County, CA is not a pilot. My info maybe old, but the
Navy had a rule that to command an aircraft carrier, you had to be a
pilot. Might make a good rule for airport managers.
(Sour grapes alert.)
I might have a chip on my shoulder about this. As the manager of
Apple Valley, CA (KAPV) airport job because available, I was not
given a interview as I didn't have a BA business degree. My Masters
Degree in Computer Science and a BS in Chemistry of course, didn't
prepare me to run a airport. However, I also have twenty years of
military experience as a flight safety officer and Supervisor of Flying.
(Enough sour grapes.)
Seems to me, we need to get EAA and AOPA on this right away before
it gets out of hand.
Please write and call anybody you think can help.

i personally see it as basic common sense to not test fly aircraft over homes. i won't do it with new engines on certified aircraft why should we do it with amature built, experimental aircraft, with autozone parts.
with the increase in building around airports it has become harder to find safe places to test fly aircraft but that does not reduce our responsibility to those people on the ground. if enough crap gets kicked up from this accident we will see test flying banned from these types of strips. it seems that we might need to step up to the plate. Maybe have the eaa and the faa get together for a determination of what is an appropriate strip for test flights.
and lets be honest, even if you have to drive for two hours to a remote strip to fly your hours off, after spending 60 to a 100k on your project would not you like to have someplace with decent off field capabilties, instead of being stuck with having to eat a house. and the real possisbilty of kiling someone on the ground, not to mention the resulting lawsuit against your estate, leaving your widow pennyless.
