I finally made the jump and started to rivet my wing spars for my 701.  All seemed to be going well C and I've got about 6 rivets in one spar.  I started from the center C all rivets look good C but when I look at my spar from the end C it is starting to bend in towards the formed side of the rivet.  I can tell that it is bending at the rivet locations.  It is really noticeable C and I hesitate to go any further until I figure out why.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why my spars are starting to bend in?  I shimmed everything straight before I set any of the rivets (down to 1mm).  You can see the blocks in the pictures.  Any insight would be helpful.

Ryan, I laid my spars flat on the table and I back riveted the rivets
by hitting the end of the rivet with the rivet gun. I made a hole inside
of a flat piece of bar stock and set the rivet head inside. Some of the
rivets I had to redo, but most all of them came out ok. Specially when
you have to rivet the doublers.. Good luck, RS

Hello Ryan,

I did something similar and the spars came out straight.
I took one of the rivet squeezer cups (smooth chromed) and
drilled a matching hole in a counterweight steel plate.
Then the spar laying horizontal supported in a number of
places with the rivet head in the cup. I actually used a
regular hammer (with a polished surface) to hammer a shop
head on the back of the rivets. I only had a few (~5) cases
where this failed when the rivet head jumped out of the cup
and was laying on the edge of the cup when I hit the rivet.
Besides that the process worked very well and the rivets
came out very reproducible.

Maarten, plans building 601xl,
nearly done with the second wing.

Ryan,

I used a small arbor press and placed rivet tools from one of the squeezers in line with each other by machining some pieces to hold them. A piece of masking tape to hold the rivet head in place and just set it against the bottom cupped rivet face and close up the press. Notice the piece of rubber around the upper rivet face, that helps keep all the metals together before the upper face touches the rivet to for the shop head.

Here is a tiny url to my kitlog site around 10/30/2006 with pictures of what I am talking about.
