Hello:

Question to those who have the Grand rapids, Engine Monitor...

I notice that when I set the Rpm,,,numbers, they never remain steady....

example if I pull down to 1700 RPM it goes up and down, is that normal, any
suggestions,, does any one has this problem?

I called, Greg could not give me a definite answer... sooo...

Appreciate any suggestions or answers

Thanks

Bert

Small fluctuations are likely quite normal, especially if you have a

fixed pitch prop. Even with a constant speed prop there will be
occasional 10 to 20 rpm fluctuations as the prop governor reacts to
gusts, etc.

Do you have a fixed pitch or constant speed prop? How large
fluctuations are you seeing?

Bert C I think what you are seeing is exactly what you saw on your round RPM guage.....you just didn't notice the needle momentarily changing 20 RPMs.  You see the numbers now C much more accurate presentation of what the engine is actually doing.

Normal on the flat panel stuff from a guy whom is now a flat panel enthusiast.

Dana: Thansk for your comments. The only thing is should some time the
numbers remain steady, that is, after the fluctuation as you said, should not be
a time that the thing stays let's say 1900.. or whatever?

Mine does not,, is always changing, true is only 10 0r 20 rps,, but that, agravates
me.....
Thank you again,

Bert

Sorry if I am coming too late to the conversation to know what’s going on, but:

If it is a digital tach, it must have some kind of cut-off range or range that it will ignore the change within. If that were 1 rpm and the digital numbers went to the nearest 1 rpm, I would think it would be constantly changing back and forth between different numbers, so I would think they would program it to the nearest 5 rpm or 10 rpm or 20 rpm; whatever gives you what you need to know without constantly changing; and that you would see 1710 rpm or 1720 rpm or whatever, but never 1712 rpm or 1718 rpm. Maybe yours doesn’t have a wide enough dead band to keep from jumping around, or maybe that it meets their design criteria but not yours. Could the sender’s resolution be different from the display?

Terry

With a fixed pitch prop, if the throttle and mixture settings are
fixed, the engine rpm will depend on the airspeed and altitude. But,
there are always small variations in airspeed and altitude, and that
leads to small variations in rpm. Those variations occur no matter what
type of engine instruments you have, but they are much harder to see on
old steam gauges.

What you are seeing sounds very normal.

Thanks Kevin for the info.

I feel better, knowing that is nothing wrong with the Instrument... now if I can
get my Nav Aid to work....
