Joe post about insulation made me think of a question I've been meaning to ask. Is anyone putting in any sort of floor covering in their plane?

I bought a carpet runner made to go down the center of minivans. I cut it up into pieces that fit the floor in front of each seat and a piece that fits the heel support. I fastened the pieces with snaps. The male snaps are riveted to the floor and the female snaps are crimped on the carpet. The runner has a light rubber backing with a low pile carpet. The carpet doesn't unravel when you cut it.

Did you happen to weigh it by any chance?

Gig,
I have found some re-cycled material at Wal-mart in the automotive section. It reminds me of outdoor/kitchen carpet. I have been thinking about using that.
Can't remember the specifics, (weight, size, price), but a trip down to the store might be worth a look.

Gig,

No I didn't weigh them. But since you asked, I went to the plane and weighed them. The grand total is 17.5 ounces. This includes the carpet and 24 female snaps. Add about another 0.5 ounces for the male snaps in the plane.

Should the covering be fire resistant?

HI Gig,
I put 3/8-inch soundproofing foam on the floor from firewall to seats
and a light carpet on that
which puts the heal channel nearly flush with it. That improved the
sound level as much as any of it..

Hi Ken,
I'd suggest burning a bit of it first. Some of these will burn intensely
or give off
poisonous fumes and some will not support a flame.
Should be fire resistant if you ever "plan to have" a fire in the plane.

For those of you fortunate to live near an aircraft manufacturing plant, consider contacting them about buying their interior scraps and leftovers.

When I was working for Learjet, I was able to obtain $400/ yard carpet and $600 leather for $50 a bag (1982 prices). Each shipset bag contained enough matching leftovers from a Lear 35 or 45 to re-do 2 or 3 four place general aviation aircraft. It was all treated with flame retardant to FAR specs.

Gig,
I used automotive trunk liner. It's very light weight carpet. I tested it for flammability. I had to hold it directly in the flame of my gas stove before it would light. When it did it smoldered more than burned and didn't give off much smoke, but did burn. I filled in the areas around the heel support with sound proofing mat from ACS, and then put the trunk liner over that, giving the floor a level appearance. You get this stuff at most autoparts stores.
