Crashed Hard Drive

Hey guys,



I have a crashed backup hard drive that I "DID NOT" copy back onto my new computer.

As fate would have it, all of my construction photos are on it!



As of now, getting the information off is around $900.



Any ideas beside make sure you have multiple back ups in the future?

Hi Rich,



Let me make a few silly comments on your situation.  They may help, 

or they may not.



First, the pictures you "Lost" may not really be needed.  The primary 

purpose of such photos is to convince your inspector or DAR that you 

actually built the plane.  Other parts of the proof include your 

build log which documents (hopefully in brief) the steps you took to 

build your plane.  I'm no expert on whether or not these pictures are 

really necessary to get your E-AB airworthiness certificate.  Perhaps 

a conversation with your local FSDO can resolve this question.  Even 

the FAA understands the reality of lost data on broken computers.



Now for the really silly comment.  I remember when IBM came out with 

the PC/XT.  This was the first consumer computer with a hard disk 

drive rather than just floppy disks.  The XT had a whole 10 megabytes 

of storage - perhaps 1 megabyte of which was consumed by Microsoft's 

fat operating system (which did not include Windows).  One of the big 

computer experts of the time suggested it was irresponsible of 

consumers to have computers with such a huge storage capacity since 

they just didn't have the know-how and responsibility to have so much 

data in one place.  (The cited 10 megabytes is perhaps 1 ten 

thousandth the size of the typical PC hard drive today.)

Have you tried accessing the disk when it isn't the startup drive of the computer?

 Did the Hard Drive crash while in the mainframe? You might try to remove it and place it in an external hard drive adapter box and try to bring it back up. Also, you might check with a local Tech School or College and see if one of the Instructor's or student assistants would be willing to help you out. FWIW I found out the hard way to back up all critical documents and such on a thumb drive or external hard drive so I understand your problem.

A lot depends on where it's located and it's condition.  Generally,

"crashed" just means the disk has enough bad sectors that the file

system software gives up, or that it has a corrupted file and so won't

boot.  If either of these is the case, the majority of your data should

be easily recoverable.



If the disk is in really bad shape, you might have to buy recovery

software - I'm sure it can be had for far less than $900.



If the disk is still in the original computer, you should be able to

book off a CD and copy the data to a thumb drive.  I think the Windows

recovery CD will allow this, but I'm a Linux guy so I'd just boot a

Linux disk (Ubuntu probably) and do the same thing, copy to a thumb

drive or over the network.



If this disk is removed from a computer, get an external USB enclosure

and new drive bare drive. Mount the old drive in the enclosure, recover

files, remove old disk, put in new drive and start backing things up!

One caution: Before you try running the drive again, MAKE SURE that the

drive itself did not fail. If it did (the disk was not spinning when it was

done), then attempting to run it again may well destroy any ability the

recovery service has to retrieve the data. If the machine crashed and would

not reboot, but the drive was spinning, then software fixes stand a

reasonable chance.

Being a retired IT type person, I do have several commercial hard drive

recovery programs.  If you want to send my your hard drive I will try to

recover all the photos for you.



I can process any EIDE Hard Drive but NOT Serial ATA drives.



Happy to help if I can, I know what a traumatic situation that can be.

A few years ago I had a hard drive fail, and while I had backup disks, they weren't current.



So I bought a new drive (bigger & faster than my old one) and installed Windows on it. Then I did a little research & downloaded a drive recovery program that had gotten good reviews but cost only $40.



I was able to salvage about 90% of my lost files so I was pretty relieved!

One thing that may work is: Place the drive in the freezer overnight and in the morning, place it back in the computer or in an external enclosure. Mount it and retrieve the data.
