This seems like it should be a common problem, so I'm curious to hear what other have done.

I'm about to close up my left wing, and I'm testing just how difficult it will be to remove the tank once the wing is closed.  The access holes make it possible, but it's certainly not an enjoyable task, even in the most optimum circumstance of the wing still sitting in the wing stand.

Now on the left wing, the pitot line runs straight through the center of the spar, about an +-inch aft from the center bolt on every tank attach bracket.  You can still get the bolt in there, but gimme a freakin' break.  You can't use a socket wrench over the bolt with the pitot line in the way, so you'd be stuck using a simple wrench inside that confined space to tighten\loosen that center bolt.  Since my installation is fairly standard, I'm wondering what others have done to make this easier.

I'm thinking of re-running the pitot line about an inch off-center toward the top surface of the wing.  That way I can still get a socket over all 3 bolts on each bracket.

Comments appreciated.

Just following up with what I did.   I moved the pitot line over.  In this link you can see where the pitot line terminates offcenter at the inboard rib.  I got some advice from Mike Stewart to replace the terminating fitting with an elbow fitting pointing aft. (On order.)   Anyway, now the pitot line runs between the tank attach bolts and still easily under the bellcrank.  Sooooo, it should be much easier for me to get the tank on\off as needs arise.   For those not on the wings yet, it's easier to drill this alternate pitot line hole before assembling the wing.

( a few more pics show the pitot line from other views.)

That elbow pointing aft is gonna point the pitot tubing right at the aileron pushrod.  Consider moving your pitot tubing run below and aft of the foremost lightening hole.  There's just not enough room to mess around in there near the aileron pushrod.  Hear me now and believe me later...

And take RV-8 builders' advice with a huge grain of salt...their wing root is more accommodating.

Van's has a Construction FAQ on their site about wiring & pitot run locations in the wing.

Dan,
I was curious to ask you about the AD issued by Van's regarding the nut that
holds the fuel tube in place inside the tanks. What are your plans to crack
open your tanks and put a safety wire on the nut that holds the fuel tube in
place. As I remember you have a flop tube but the Ad is for both types of
fuel tube configurations.

Thanks

Arrrgghhhh...I just seen the safefy notice....OH man I would hate to
have to do this job...Not as much as I would hate to crash the plane
though....And yes I did proseal my inspection plates directly to the
tank...Awww crap!

I know my nuts are on really tight on both my flop tubes.

Bummer!

At least My wings are not on yet.

Steve,

I do plan to comply with the Mandatory SB at some point when it's
convenient. I had loaned my sealant gun out and I'm getting it back later
this week. When I have a week of planned down time, I'll have at it.

If you follow the VAF Forums, you'll see that several people have checked
theirs and they *were* loose. There is legitimacy to the SB in my opinion.

That said, I think it opens up a huge can of worms. You need to be
*extremely careful* when complying with this SB to make sure you don't
create new and additional problems that you didn't have before. I'll leave
it at that.

Mike built both a -6A and -8: On average, I think that comes out as two
-7's. :>

Thanks for the advice.
