I just decarboned & replaced the crank seals my 582 blue head. It runs great but has one big problem. It keeps forcing coolant out of the overflow. At higher rpms it will fill the expansion bottle in a few minutes, but nothing comes out under 3500. It will continue forcing the coolant out until enough is lost for the engine to overheat. Water Temp is perfect until enough fluid is forced out and then skyrockets. It isn’t the cap as I have tried 2 and it makes no difference. There is pressure inside even after cool down. I am assuming either a gasket leaking or improperly installed. I would appreciate any ideas.
Thanks

Three:

1. Leaking head O-ring allows high pressure gas into the water
jacket. Replace O-rings and carefully inspect seats.

2. Leaking cylinder bolt allows gas from the block into the water
jacket. (Remember that on a 2-stroke the case is pressurized.)
Replace cylinder base gasket and lube the cylinder bolts on installation.

3. The coolant system needs bleeding. Any residual gas in the coolant
system will expand and force out coolant when it gets hot. Make sure
you vent the system vigorously. (E.g. shake the crap out of it.)

Hi George,
My 912 was exhibiting the same symptoms. Finally tightened all the hose clamps and problem was solved. No sign of a leak on the ground, but that was what was wrong in this case. Worth a try if you have't gone there already

Hi George,

Guy has hit the nail on the head. You have high pressure bleeding into your coolant.

Sure did. Turns out my old torque wrench was about 15 inlbs off. Torqued the
head with a new one and it woiks poifect. Now all I have to do is pull the
head off & retorque the cylinders & check all the misc other bolts. Fun fun!
Thanks all
George

A few ideas on using the torque wrench.

You should check the calibration on your torque wrench every year or if you
use it as seldom as I do now check it each time you use it.

When you are finished using The torque wrench remember to reset spring type
wrenches back to 0 to take pressure off the spring.

Never use the torque wrench to loosen nuts or bolts.

To check the torque on a nut or bolt you first must slacken the nut or bolt.

Finally Snap-On makes a real nifty, and expen$ive, digital torque wrench
that calibrates itself before each use. It has both an audible and
vibration notification that the pre set torque has been achieved. The
wonder of the load cell!

I like my 1/4 inch Computorq3. About $280:

My torque wrench is a 1/4 snap-on from my railroad days (late 60's). I just
talked to my local snap-on rep & he'll rebuild & recalibrate it for free.
Gotta love those guys.

If you are going to strip down to re-torque everything you may as well
inspect the seals/O rings as you go.

Have fun and let us know when it's running properly.
