I've just finished attaching the fuselage to the tail cone and am
contemplating installing the landing gear now instead of later. Dave
Saylor will be using my fuselage for the next composites class at
Aircrafters and I've got to trailer this beast about 350 miles up and
back in mid November. I'd feel better with the added suspension it
would pick up from the legs for the ride on the trailer... as well as
the ease of loading/unloading with it on wheels. With the fiberglass
work on the horizon, I'll need to be able to easily move the plane in
and out for sanding, etc. as I can't do that work inside my printing
plant.

Can any of you past the point of gear installation tell me why I
shouldn't do it now? Any other thoughts?

Thank you all...

A couple of thoughts; Almost everything you'll be doing for awhile is
more difficult up on the gear. Battery, Electrical, panel, and even the
glass top. Most of the sanding you'll be doing for the fitting (after
Dave's cutting) will still involve sanding the top while it's off and
then fitting it back on. Then there's the doors which I've already
fitted, initially, but I know others recommend waiting. If you've just
connected the tail, you probably still have a good amount of interior
panel work to do. That seems easier with the whole thing down low.

Now having said that, my only experience is working on a fuse that's
rolling around on a pair of motorcyle stands from HF and a couple of
2x4s. So I don't have much comparison.

Is your trailer wide enough for the gear? When I moved mine 2 months
ago, the gear /tires were wider than the trailer. My mechanic buddy
has a special bracket to hold the gear . He has moved several planes
that way. We only had to go a couple miles. I don't think I'd want to
move 350 the way we had it on the trailer.

On the other hand. Any help you get with the top : fitting/sanding ,
etc, will be worth the trouble moving it . Should save you several
weeks work.

Two weeks ago I moved mine to the hangar...I had a heck of a time finding a towing company that would take it on mainly because of the 8' main gear span AND the value..They sent the big truck...K trailer ??, because it had the highest level of liability insurance, worked out OK because I strapped down EVERYTHING we could to the real estate I was renting for the 10 mile trip.

I had evidence of insurance for movement, which I paid some portion of a high dollar premium for no reason. The towing company asked me a value...AND being an licensed insurance broker...I told the truth...trust me, if you lie, it WILL bite you...it's that Murphy's law thing...anyhow, Given the cost of the completed fuse (minus doors and glass), full panel, zero time engine, prop etc..I told him $150K...they put the owner of the company on the line...seems he is an aviation buff...that doesn't mean he was cutting me a break. The trip early in the AM...cost $250. $75 more than quoted over the phone but I WAS warned that if the value was high..the heavily insured truck was coming...I have to admit the driver took care of it like it was a Mink covered Lamborghini with Jenifer Love Hewitt sitting on the passenger seat (Sorry, heavy lust kicking in, no I don't learn!)..the RV darn near cost the same!! OK...off the topic...I don't regret putting it on the gear...allowed me to do ALOT more in the garage..But I can tell you...I have to make dedicated time to go to the airport to work on the airplane...I could have kept in the garage for several more weeks, to finish more but my Buds know why that wasn't happening...Bottom line...the airport is really creepy at 9 PM...especially when your hangar is right next to the only drive-in in Las Vegas...the up side? I can tune my radio to the drive in and listen to movies or even haul a chair out and watch one!! Down side? They put the crappy movies on the screen I can see..And I mean SEE...it is right next to the airport fence.

Love and learn...
Keep it home, where you sleep or where you can work on it as long as possible, I wish I could go out now and just do a "little" something, right now for now.
Harbor Freight Dollies had mine moving around on the gear easy...look for sales...you can get three for $75, buy three pairs and split it with your fellow builder..

I moved my 10 project (not on gear) a year ago and it it was quite easy. I used a U-Haul trailer that is quite low to the ground. I used plywood planks and 2x4's with two furniture dollies. Min 3 people to help 4 better.

I can assure you that it is a lot easier to do wiring and doors if it is NOT on the gear legs(closer to the ground). I have probably been in and out 1000 times and it is a whole lot easier closer to the ground.
