I know this has been talked about before, but I just bought two ea. Rotax oil filters and the cost was astronomical. Since the last ones I bought I think the price has gone up at least 25%, probably more like 30% ....
2 825 706 Oil filter w/box 22.78 45.56T
I know, I know, you get what you pay for. Well in this case, with the U.S. dollar at it's lowest level in years, I don't think that will hold water.
It seems like someone did some extensive testing of the filters and spec-ed another brand that was equal to or superior to the Rotax filter.
gotta have some relief....

Hi Tommy,
I have posted on oil filters and the research of a good number of the oil filters on the market that are very good substitutes. Do a search on this forum and I'm sure you will find it.
If you have an experimental of some type you can use these, but if you are SLSA you can not.
Top two:
Pure One PL10241
Fram Tough Guard 3614
Pure One is an absolute stand out. It is better than the Rotax and edges out the Fram. The Fram Tough Guard, not the standard Fram or the Extra Guard, is the one to use.

Paul,
If/when you buy it would you mind posting the dimensions on this list. It looks a little long for my CH701 application.
Thanks,
Tommy Walker

Hi Roger,
I read your earlier report, but it put the Mobile 1 filter second. That's what I've been using on my 912ULS (the one that has given me the most trouble has been the Rotax filter).
Did you change your findings? Just curious...
I can get the PureOne locally at our Pep boys so perhaps I should switch to that one...

Hi Tommy,
Sorry I haven't been around on the forum lately. We had a big LSA Fly-In in Page, Az. I will post some pictures in a pdf file later. It was a great time, good food, good people and lots of scenery from the Grand canyon, Marble Canyon, Lake Powell and Monument Valley. We will do it again next October.
The Pure One PL10241 and the Fram Tough Guard TG3614 are .37" longer than the Rotax. They will fit a lot of Rotax 912's, but in some cases the exhaust pipe is just a little too close to the filter to let it screw on. It's funny because it varies even between the same plane MFG. whether the filter's fit. For instance on some Flight Design CT's they will clear the exhaust pipe and on others they won't.
You can't go wrong if you pick the:
Pure One (I believe the best filter of the 4, better filtering qualities)
Fram Tough Guard
Mobile One
Rotax filter

I agree the Pure One is a really good filter. Available at Advanced auto Parts.

Pepboys also has them. As often as we change oil filters (50 hours for 91 octane and 25 hours for 100LL) the Pure One, Fram, Mobile One and the Rotax are all good filters. I just believe for the money Pure One is a stand out. Remember we pay for the Euro exchange, shipping rates and middle men to get a Rotax filter. Hence the $20+ price tag.
In this case the extra $15 per filter does not equate to better. If you fly an SLSA then you must use a Rotax filter unless your plane's Mfg. says you can use something else.

Anyone know the dimensions on these filters (Pure, Mobil 1)? I purchased the TG3614 and it is about 3/8" too long to fit in my 914. Are the Pure and Mobil 1 the same length?
It looks like I am going to have to pay the ridiculous Rotax prices for their filters.
Thanks for the info.

Pete,
The Napa and STP appear to be the same length as the Fram at least when cross referencing to the same filter. Do you have filter numbers for the Napa and STP so I can verify if they will indeed fit?
