I've heard both sides of the argument for premium auto fuel or 100LL. KitFox will tell you they use 100LL with Decalin or TCP and change oil every 20-25 hrs. Where I live premium auto fuel now has 10% Ethanol which some say will destroy parts of your fuel system. Since you're not sure of the quality of auto fuel doesn't it make sense to go with 100LL with decalin and frequent oil changes using a semi-synthetic oil like Aeroshell Plus 4. Has anyone out there actually disassembled a Rotax 912 and seen the results of auto fuel or 100LL??

At Oshkosh in a Rotax seminar Phil Lockwood said that if you burn 100LL just
use the right oil, change it every 25 hours and run the engine hard (full
power) reasonably often and you won't have a problem. As I recall he didn't
have any experience or advice on the additives.

Dale,
I've not disassembled an entire 912 that has run on 100LL. However, I recently did a gearbox disassembly and inspection on a 912 that has 650+ hours on it running predominantly 100LL, Pennzoil Motorcyle Oil with oil/filter changes at 25 hour intervals. This is the first gearbox inspection I've done that has been run with predominantly 100LL so I was curious to see how it compared to another 600+ hour gearbox run mostly on autogas, Penzoil Motorcycle Oil, w/ 50 hr oil/filter change interval.

Both gearboxes were in great shape with all parts within service limits. The autogas gearbox springs had less wear and were within new limits so we did not replace these springs. The 100LL gearbox, though within service limits, were not within new limits so we replaced these springs. Except for the spring wear difference they were virtually identical in appearance and wear.

Note that both engines were serviced per Rotax recommendations. The primarily 100LL engine changed oil at 25 hour intervals. The primarily Autogas engine changed oil at 50 hour intervals. Both used the same mineral based non-synthetic motorcycle oil and genuine Rotax filters.

For what its worth, I use Pennzoil Motorcycle Oil, primarily 87 octane autogas with no ethanol(so far), and change oil/filters at 50 hour intervals.
