Does anyone have any experience with any of these  smoke oils mentioned on smokingairplanes.com?  May be time to stock up  again with the price of oil down again.

Yes, and a great way to obtain some is to contact your local airshow at the conclusion of activities.  They usually don't want to store it and make it available for a song.

My favorite was because the Blues often contractually demanded it.

Corvus.  We would have to secure supplies in 55 gal drums and at the end

of a city tour, we would have an odd lot supply of 7 to 30 gallons

surplus.  No one wanted to store a partial 55 gallon drum in a hangar

for six months.  Flows easy and burns without the brown tint of some

other refractions.  They liked the billowy, white result.

Mark,

John at Smoking Airplanes is testing a new smoke oil that is mineral oil

based.  The early results have been good, according to him.  He plans more

testing in cold weather to make sure he gets adequate flow under those

conditions and also wants to insure the injectors don't get fowled.  He

says it has good density and hang time due to the high parafin content.

My son's college roommate and his father  are Shell oil dealers.  He told my son Saturday that he can get  me a "deal" on oils.   I haven't seen any prices yet, but was curious  what experiences anyone had with the Shell products.

I have used a whole barrel of Vitrea 13 without problems in a smokongplanes system.

I just picked up a barrel for cheap after a local air show got rained out.

The Conoco Industrial 70 is a clear as water 10 weight high paraffin oil that I think is the best I have used and the least  costly from the dealers around me.  Every time I smoke with it I get a lot of remarks about how much it hangs around.  I think I Mark I have mentioned it to you.  I have also used the concrete form oil that is around $10 a gallon and smells like berries when you pour it in with a slight rose cooler. It is easier to find at the supply houses than chasing down the Shell and Conoco dealers for me but I prefer the Industrial 70 because it's so clean burning.

We use Shell ONDINA 917, expensive but good.

Has anyone tried used automatic transmission fluid? Is it good or bad? I  have a auto repair shop with lots of used fluid.

I can get this stuff by the case Pappy... Usually because of a "use  by"

date that has expired.  Does it really work that well for smoke?  I

always thought it was synthetic and would not burn all that well.

Hey guys, what you burn you breath.  I tried tranny oil, but after puking up my guts and having a headache for two days, I surmised it just might not be a good thing to use even if it was free.  I made a decision that if I was going to kill brain cells, I'd do it the old fashioned way....with a good well aged dbl malt scotch.

MSDS sheets are available on all of these alternatives including Pappy's

Mobil One synthetic 10W that is recycled.  Know the handling and

toxicity of any product that you use.  If you need one, an MSDS sheet,

let me know.



 



 Etienne provided some great (Fabulous) smoke shots which many of you

can relate to the ingestion of the oil you are burning.  Then again

Pappy has probably plumbed that Chinese leather mask with an independent

supply of O2 or nitrous oxide blended gas.



 



Vegetable, Mineral or Synthetic they all get the job done with differing

toxicity to the pilot.
