Enjoy it while it lasts, Gary....there's a forecast for snow flurries
for Lower Michigan next Tuesday, and Aussie-land will still be warm,
I'll bet.
Speaking of snow, now that my engine is working like a charm, it's
time to get back to thinking about a different design for snow skis
for my plane. My old ones have a section of ski right behind the
wheel, which collects snow. I also feel that the wheel penetrates the
ski too far...about 2". This was what I thought was correct, but in
seeing other style skis, I've decided to make a new set with less
penetration, and no ski area right behind the wheel. This will allow
for less snow buildup behind the wheel...nothing there for snow to
build up on...and having the wheel penetrate less allows for less
drag in the snow. What got me concerned, was having a problem getting
out of 9 inches of snow last year. I finally got it up "on step", but
it ate up a bunch of runway. I also had to raise the plane to slide
the skis under the wheels (one at a time), and my new design
(borrowed from the others I've seen) will allow for installation
without raising the plane. So you see, Gary, there is some benefit to
keeping that snow shovel close at hand. : )

Thanks, Gary.
I just got back from a 1.1 hr flight which garnered just over 100
miles. Not too bad when you figure I was doing some VERY steep climbs/
attempts to stall, so I wasn't getting very many miles on the GPS
during that time. The plane seems to climb at a LOT steeper angle
now, maybe due to a fresh engine. In the spirit of the break-in
mandates, I'm not subjecting the engine to long extended climbs, just
a few short steep ones, testing the gravity feed to the carb, with
and without aux. fuel pump on. Sure is fun to see that VSI hit the
"peg" even for a brief time.
