After hearing from three separate sources directly that Garmin had no plans for upgrading the 496 anytime soon (Aug '0Cool we have all received word of the new, improved Garmin 696. Now it is clear why they were offering such a killer deal for upgrades to the 496XM with $100 back at OSH '08.
Now we know "Coming Soon" is less than 3 months and "No time soon" is 3 months and three weeks. Its 2.3 lbs with a 7" screen displaying 800 x 480 pixels. XM weather, Chartview, SafeTaxi, Simulated Six pack and the kitchen ginsu knife. Now for a Gizmo mount.

I'd like to hear what the Chartview option adds for cost,
and what the subscription price is. As it stands now,
the price is on par with some of the tablet offerings,
but it lacks some of the features. But the chart
subscription pricing and if the Chartview option costs
extra, it could really take the wind out of the sales.
On the other hand, if all charts are included, and updates
are free, it could make it a super attractive way to go.

Dewey is going to be talking about it at our weekly dinner tonight. It
is not available yet and will be "Later this year". I think it was a
pre-emptive advertisement to redirect pending dollars to competitor's
products. I will ask the question and response to same tomorrow.

When Tim asks, a faster response is deserved for all his hard work at
RV10 Central and on his RV10 University site.

The Garmin 696 is not available today. It is expected to be rolled out
in "purchase form" at the AOPA Convention and available at vendor's
shops immediately after. The Chartview (all FAA charts) is included and
at no charge for the "First Six Months" after registration which,
standard subscription prices then prevail. "Would you like some candy
with that purchase?"

SafeTaxi is included at No Charge. XM weather capability is included
and the additional subscription fee applies on immediate activation.
$3295 is a Retail "Do not advertise below" pricing. You read between
the lines.

The wind was taken out of the sales when Garmin gave the $100 instant
rebate and reduced the upgrade cost to Trade In and Walk away with a
496XM unit at OSH '08. Then again some builders have more money and a
fatter 401K than I do "On this date in time".

I'll check it out at AOPA next week. Which is when it says it will be on sale.

Thanks for the insight John!

There is no read between the lines at all....no ambiguity. The Portable
GPSes have always had an MRP, not a MAP (minumum advertised price) policy.
That's why I tell people, "they are the same price everywhere, I just
appreciate the business a bit more than most"!

Anyway, the 696 is indeed a really slick product. Also, regarding the
mounting, by the time you put a gizmo or some sort around this thing, it'd
be huge. If I were a betting man I might wait a little bit to see what
other alternatives appear in the market!

My 2 cents as usual.

Cheers,
Stein

One potential killer is that the approach charts go away the minute
they exceed the update cycle. Enroute somewhere at midnight on the end
of a cycle, too bad, no approach charts. Not known yet is how easy
updates will be.
Other competitors let you download updates several days in advance,
and let you use expired charts after acknowledging a warning that they
are expired.

Tim you are funny! Free updates from Garmin. What will you think of
next?
The 696 would be ideal to double as a sun visor.

Of course, to be a good sun visor it would need to have synthetic
vision. It looks like they are not using Jep plates, so that should
make the updates cheaper, but it also would bother me if I had to
update on or after the day of expiration of the old plates to be able
to use them.

The other downside I see is there is no automotive element to it. I really like my 496 for the fact that it can get me where I want to go in the RV-10 with XM WX and Radio and then transport it to the car and let it provide directions there as well. Very handy.

Having said that, the display looks great and the maps would be awesome, except for that whole timing out issue. Maybe there will be a way to download the next version early like other systems.

It does say in the description that you can load City Navigator maps on it so you should still be able to use it for auto. One of the reasons I decided to go with a 496 was because I could use it in my car or on a boat because of it being water resistant. I can’t see spending the money on weather and only use it a couple times a month. Now I can use it daily.

Whoaa...who started the rumor that you had to buy the stuff the "day" after
expiration? I'm not 100% sure on this product, but most of the other Garmin
products that use charting (like the GMX, MX, G900X, G1000, G600, etc..)
have a "sunset" period where the data is still usable for some period of
time. I think it's 180 days but I'm not 100% sure. I just know that on all
the other products is doesn't become useless the day the data expires. How
about your GPS? Does the map quit working the day the database expires?

These are the rumors and wives tails that can get spread with little to no
actual or factual first hand basis - so let's not hypothesize (at least
negatively) about such things until we actually know the facts, eh?

My 2 cents as usual.

Stein

On page 125 of the 696 owners manual

<http://www.garmin.com/manuals/GPSMAP695_OwnersManual.pdf> it says:

"FliteCharts data is revised every 28 days. Charts are still viewable
during a period
that extends from the cycle expiration date to the disabled date.
FliteCharts is
disabled 180 days after the expiration date and are no longer available
for viewing
upon reaching the disabled date. When turning on the GPSMAP 695/696, the
Powerup
Page indicates any of five different possible criteria for chart
availability. These
indications are whether the databases are not configured, not available,
current, out
of date, or disabled."

Looks like you can view them up to 180 days after they expire.

There was some discussion of availability of Auto mode on the 696. I don’t know if that issue was put to rest but I would not make that my determining factor because one can buy a Garmin 200W for $175.00 or less. I have built in GPS in two cars but placed the 200W in one of my trucks and it's better than the built-in's. I think the auto mode of my 396 stinks in relationship to my 200W when used on land.

My thoughts exactly. Even the 396/496 doesn't do the auto thing as well as a Nuvi, and I know a number of my customers who've had their x96's stolen, left in rental cars, etc.. I tell ya, I'd sure as heck rather lose a $200 Nuvi over my several thousand $$ aviation unit. The little Nuvi's are better anyway (quicker and easier to use in the car).....

My 2 cents as usual.

Actually, the TomTom units are a bit nicer and you don’t have to pay for map updates.  Like I said it all depends, I don’t see the point of spending $30 to $50 a month for weather and have it only get used a couple times when you can bring it with you. If I was going to leave it in the aircraft, I would just add weather to the EFIS and not even bother with a portable unit. My 196 has seen tons more use in my truck than it ever did in an aircraft. BTW, the Nuvi’s use the exact same City Navigator maps that the x96 series units do. One thing I noticed about my Nuvi 250W is that it seems to update position a lot slower than my old 196. It’s always lagging my position.
