Yes, great job. I've really enjoyed the newsletters so far.

But, I must say, I never knew I was so whimsical! Smile I'm the builder that Nick graciously accommodated with the piano hinge modification for the wingtips.

I really wanted the tips removable for a few reasons, listed here in descending order of believability:

1) Nick indicated that he would at some point next year develop short wing tips that incorporate a semi-winglet design similar to that of the current extended tips. I like keeping my options open. A lot of my flying is in the Southwest and Mexico, and when the thermals really get cranking it's nice to have a little less wing area. Time and experience will tell, but I'm ready to buy the new wingtips the moment Nick makes 'em. When I get to make the comparison, I'll be sure to post results.

2) One day if I get a really wild hair, I can slosh the wingtips on the extended tips, add fuel caps, and plumb them in. If I could get 6 gallons/side that would provide an easy 7 hours no-reserve endurance. Who wants to be copilot on a Texas to Germany flight?

3) If I'm going to be competitive in the sport class at Reno in 2009, I'll probably need to clip the wings anyway.

Buz et al,
I wanted to add some things in response to the one article in the newsletter about fuel starvation. Because this is an experimental people have chosen different fuel selectors. I actually prefer the one such as in BZ. When flying an aircraft it's important to understand that minimums are just that. That goes for fuel, weather, etc. Prepare for your flight by basing your minimum contingency fuel on the weather that you might encounter. In any case I try to keep twice the FAA min. required fuel on board. You may not have to have it, but you'll miss it if you don't have it and need it. Fuel management not only requires a degree of situational awareness, but also an understanding of how your fuel system works. I saw a few times when we were flying the Lightnings that people would run one tank dry to try to get a calibrated dip stick. That normally would be ok. As is often the case, the flight is only as good as the string of procedures tying it all together. If you were up and ran a tank dry and decided that you would close the one valve to the empty tank, open the valve to the full tank and turn on the pump then you'd likely be fine. If, however, you close the valve to the empty tank and turn the pump on before opening the good tank, or if you turn the pump on and empty tank before opening the valve to the good tank then you might very well suck air into the lines and may or may not be able to get fuel to the engine. I have also found it an interesting time when running on one tank empty and having a partial load on the other tank when you roll away from the fuel pickups you can get an engine sputter. (disclaimer: you may not roll into a turn the same number of degrees as I do) Brian W.

Super, Bill. Great reasons as to why the tips should be removable, especially the last one about racing at Reno. Actually the Lightning skunk works has been talking about clipping the tips on the Lightning for some time now. Wait until you see the future clipped wing, tail dragger, 8 cylinder, single seat version of the Lightning. It will be faster than the speed of stink, roll like a steel ball, and climb like a homesick angel. But the bottom line is that experimental aircraft allow builders to have just what they want - and that in itself is why you should have interchangeable tips for your jet. Good job.
