Fred,
This is a common problem on pre 1989 Yak 52's. The telltale sign is the blue stain which will show up around the fuel cavity cover plates at the inboard rear cover primarily. The reason on pre-1989 Yak 52's is because these aircraft have a single vent system for all three tanks; left main, right main and header tank. 1989 and later models have a duel vent system. Easily seen by looking on the belly of the fuselage where 2 vent tubes vs. one can be seen. Many of these pre-89 airplanes "puke" fuel when the tanks are over 35-40 liters and the main tanks are heated by the sun on the wings. This expansion and contraction of the fuel tanks stresses and flexes the very thin aluminum, thus ultimately causing them to crack. I have seen cracks underneath the metal bands which hold the tanks in the cavity and also directly in the middle of the tank just below the fuel tank fill cap.
