Sounds like a potential FOD in elevator crash. Barry also flew AN2s, famous for his flight from Poland to Australia following the 1933 route of Aviation pioneer Bert Hinkler

This is tragic indeed, but the second article is simply frightening. It is clear that Barry was a very experienced pilot, but when something goes wrong, each and every argument will be looked for in order to blame the pilot. In Europe we must not fly with paying passengers in a Yak 52 either because the Yak 52 is not type certified and therefore may never be used for “air work”. In practice we do fly with passengers, but they never pay for it of course…And even then, it is risky.
