I have a Rotax 912 with a similar restriction on power output (18 amp rating). If I fly with my Strobes and Nav lights my battery discharges during flight. I measured the amp draw and the Whelen tip nav lights draw upwards of 7 amps by themselves. The strobe is about 1.5 amps. When I put LED lamps in the nav lights they draw less about 4/10ths of an amp. The LED's that I found to fit do not put out but about 1/3 of the light, but now I can fly with them on. I used to switch between the nav and strobes during flight so that I did not use them both at once. You are wise to beware about the amp draw. If you have the Whelen position lights that have 4 lamps they will really draw down your battery in a hurry.

Jim C Thanks for info. Where did you find LED's for nav lights. What strobe have you got C 1.5 amps sounds small C but I am not electrically knowledgeable enough to know. Also if nav lights are 7 and strobe is 1.5 C why isn't 18 amp out put enough? What else electric are you suppling C a radio I would imagine would be 1 thing.

Good questions. I have radio, transponder, strobes, nav lights, instrument post lights, gps, turn and bank, engine instrument gages, ANR headset power supply and intercom. That 18 amps is at high rpms, and 80% of that is only 14.4 amps. I should add it all up so that I know exactly how much each uses, but my experience is that flying at night uses power out of the battery. After landing the engine has had to be jumped to get it to start because the descent used enough power to drain down the battery. There are no plug in lamps for the Whelen position lights. Whelen says they cannot do that because the unit has to be certified as a complete unit. To get the correct spread of light at the right intensity requires design from a clean sheet of paper anyway. Installing automotive lamps gives light that is not optimized for the lens.

Jim C Thanks for the response. Sounds like you have a fairly large electrical requirement on that plane. But C not a whole lot more than mine.

Yesterday I was flying with the nav lights, tail strobe, radio, intercom, dual fans for defrost, GPS, and instrument lights, fuel flow meter etc. Never did it start to discharge the system with the 582. on the ground at idle it was still charging at .2 amps and in the air it was around 5 amps. I kept switching between amps and volts and every thing stayed steady at 13.8V and 4.5 - 5 amps.
