Hello
I 'm interested to buy a 701 , already built (airframe & wings) but not finished.
a picture of it is attached.
it's a kit aged about 10 / 12 years (I think so ?) and my question is :
are there important aerodynamics changes with the new 701 models ?
will that change something with its performance ?
thank you !
dominique

I dont think there is any aerodynamic changes from the earlier model, the max. weight is limited to 960 lbs and there are more restrictions on engine type and weight. The rev-4 plans had a lot of changes to the wing spars and attach points to enable a weight increase to 1100 lbs so the more favoured engines like 912S could be used more fully. Flap travel is now restricted to 16 deg as the heavier models dont need as much.

There are lots of the lighter ones flying well on the 80hp Rotax or less, so it will come down to what mission you have, how much stuff you need to install and what the crew weights are.

I have a 701 from yr 2000 kit, and the plans I received state 100hp max, and came with drawings for installation of the 912S. Still 960lb gross at that point. You will find more than one of the 960lb gross designs running around with floats and Continentals, which put them way over gross. The plans show a calculation allowing over-gross operation, by derating the allowed G's during flight to maintain the same safety margin.
The landing gear has been updated since the model you posted the pic of, to the "tundra" gear with axels bolted directly to the monoleaf.
Current kits come with the formed windscreen, as opposed to sheet material. The current bubble doors do add some interior room.
Wing struts are probably two-piece in the one you are considering, vs. one piece (which initially gave some headaches due to misalignment w.r.t. fuse attach point). Jury struts are probably the one piece wraparound version and lacking the diagonal member.
Other changes too, just can't remember them.
Then the SP version (current kit) modified parts of the spar web, horizontal and wing attach points, with twenty or so parts changed throughout.

Of course you asked about aerodynamic changes, so you're probably already aware of the structural changes, and I apologize if that is the case. Aerodynamically, the current brick may have slightly more rounded corners.. but nothing significant comes to mind.

Hello Dominique

The only aerodynamic change that I know of the 701 was on the first edition 880lb frame , when they changed the slat angle . If you buy the old newsletter (now on CD) you will see the changes . Try to find the serial # .

Nice find
