Hello group, after retiring, moving, traveling and a 3 year absence I am coming
up to speed back working on my Europa again. This is my first post in the matronics
system.

I am just finishing installing my Berube conventional gear mod. I am dealing with
the subsequent re-setup of the flap operation, i.e., deciding on electric or mechanical
actuation. I am leaning toward mechanical. And how to make use of my now unused
monowheel open space. The gear is raked about a foot and intended to be raked forward
but Bob Berube told me it might be acceptable to put the rake rearward. I will
have to evaluate each positions stability and tendency to ground loop. The gear
is one piece and hangs just below the fuselage so should be fared in. I believe
I will develop wheel pants. I know this is a somewhat general question but I am
asking for suggestions (or pitfalls) and maybe pictures from those who have gone
before.

Thanks,
Bill McClellan

William,
The axle line relative to the CG position is quite far forward on the mono
Europa, which puts quite a load on the tailwheel. However, this is one
aspect of the Europa that the Factory were very happy with. It certainly
reduces the tendency to nose-over.

But certainly increases the tendency to ground loop, which often dings

the prop Sad

Van's RV8 wheel pants seem to fit fine.

That would be true for the monowheel, with its unhelpful outrigger geometry
(i.e.outrigger axes well behind the mainwheel axle).

Hi Duncan

"That would be true for the monowheel, with its unhelpful outrigger geometry

Perhaps we should be thinking in terms of "Applied Arcaic Technology" and actually attach a couple of axes forward on wing tips like WW1 Bi/Tri planes for beginners (and those well experianced)! Kinda sortta in line with main wheel.

Real men need not be scared to hit brake if you are not going absolute straight!! (Well, let's make that not too scared if you have training axes)

True for any taildragger. G-BWON (bow legged Swiss gear) broke a leg AND

dinged the prop

Graham,
Presumably the prop ding was a consequence of the leg breaking, not the
groundloop, to get back to the original discussion. Or shall we start with
poor piloting in the first place?

Duncan.

More likely, or more probably start with poor training Wink

Thanks for the on and off line replies. Bob has sold 15 conventional gear mods in US and some more worldwide. The monowheel space is rather large to waste. How have you converted the space for use?
Thanks,

How about a small bomb payload - I think for our British cousins that will almost double the bomb load carrying capacity of the RAF?

We could use a Europa bomber wing here in the U.S. since Congress has spent all the money and bankrupted the country - I think we can now afford 2 or maybe 3 Raptors - so the Europa, with the optional bomb compartment may be a significant addition to our fleet - as for missing targets, that's why we have B-52s -

Nothing new here then.
Some years ago I attended an airshow at the Woodford aerodrome ( the
home of AVRO aircraft) the weather was not good and the announcer made a
great thing of the F111's advanced avionics giving it all weather
capability, he kept this up for an extended period claiming that it was
carrying out a high speed flypast ! nothing was seen, after some time
we heard that Manchester international airport had reported a very high
speed aircraft had flown the length of its runway at low level.

Hi Bill C

I made good use of the mono-wheelbay: But first I modified the instrument module by making a recess in the mid-section C as a lot of space behind there is just wasted. This then makes room for the fingerbrakes on top of the tunnel (non-standard mod) and a few other gadgets C and leaving room for a large clip-on lid on top of the tunnel. The bottom of the bay and the front bulkhead are made out of lexan. So I have a window for aerial photography C and an easy inspection of the nosewheel suspension. I have easy access to the fuel and brake lines C and coax cables and rudder cables C all of which are attached to the interior walls.I even have the controls for the glider wing airbrakes in there. I use the extra space mainly for keeping my maps and other flying gear.
This winter I am modifying the floor window so that it can be opened. So I could lob a few handgranades if I felt like it.

Karl
