Hey all!

There is a picture on the RPA website of a CJ with a pair of droptank-like containers mounted under the wings. From the address attached to the photo I'm assuming it's a Kiwi-based machine and I was wondering if anyone out there has any further info on them.

I'm not interested in them as fuel tanks (though the option wouldn't be bad) but rather as cargo space as the area I have behind the rear seat gets filled up rather quickly.. especially at Oshkosh!

IMHO this would be a expensive way to get more baggage, both in initial cost and in the additional fuel you would burn because of the increased drag. You might be better advised to install one of the "Yakity" type "condo" baggage compartments as in Batman's (Hal Morley) new CJ6. Hal was heard to say that after the flush potty and air stair door were installed he was thinking about renting it out during OSH 09.

What size baggage compartment do you have?

PS I have flown the Yak-50 (from CA to OSH, in fact) with drop tanks and it costs about 7 knots. However, considering it gets you an extra 1.5 hrs. of range, it's an advantage in cross country flying.

Funny how nobody seems to address the engineering/stress details when talking about hanging X amount of fuel/weight on an aircraft that wasn't designed for it. If you have ever seen the Nanchang Haiyan C, which I have, you will see that the Chinese hung their pesticide tanks under the fuselage/wing area not on the outboard wings. They also beefed up the entire wing structure to handle this extra weight.

Just what does a hard landing do with say an extra 150 pounds hanging out on that arm? Or too many G's in turbulence? Inquiring minds want to know!
