Ideally, I would like to install a Rotax 912ULS, however I believe the

0-200 may have to go in the plane. I am waiting to see what AMD does for

there LSA version and because I am designing the floats for the 750 I

will need to follow suit on the engine for the LSA model in order to

complete all the testing.

That doesn't make any sense to me. Design the floats for the best airframe, motor combination. It is an amateur/homebuild, like the 701 or 801! LSA or not. Or do I miss something here?

I would imagine that the majority of CH 750 builders will be installing an 

O-200 engine, as that is what the factory will be supporting. Assuming that 

the SLSA version of the plane will also use an O-200 engine, then the 

greatest market potential for the new floats will be for the those with the 

same configuration.

With that said, I will be installing a 125 HP Franklin 4A-235 engine on my 

plane, and also have plans to install it on floats. The 125 HP Franklin 

engines are designed to fit on an O-200 mount, and are very similar in 

weight and dimensions, so the O-200 cowl will work just fine as well.

Stefan, the engine has little to do with the installation of the floats

they are in fact designed for the airframe. I am looking at Customer

relations. THE people buying an sLSA complete ready to fly aircraft are

not builders, they are not familiar with installation procedures (this

is of course generalized and does not apply to all) The LSA owners that

are interested in floats, just want to know that they work with the

combination they have purchased. I am not talking about people who have

bought a kit or built from plans, only the ones that have bought the

SLSA.

 In that my 750 will have what the sLSA version will have installed.

Builders for the most part will know that a lighter installation with

more torque and the same or more HP will be a better installation for

getting off the water.



You didn't miss anything, I just wasn't clear enough.



Once again my preference is the Rotax 912ULS or the 914 I believe this

would be a better installation in the 750, but that is based only on

personal opinion and not hard facts.

That makes sense. I get it. Just wondering how many folks will purchase a $100K ready to fly Ch750. Competition is huge in that price range. But that is a different story.

I'm going with the Jabiru 3300. It's about 40 pounds lighter than the O-200, and it's six cylinders.

I like the Jabiru 3300 engine too, especially for the light weight, and 

simplicity of the design. The issue with these engines that I don't like 

however, is the fact that there has been a lot of issues with the engine in 

keeping the cylinder head temperatures low and in the green during normal 

operations. This problem is compounded with installations in slower and 

draggy aircraft Also, since these engines develop their rated 120 HP at an 

inefficient propeller speed of 3300 RPM, there is a  need to run a shorter 

prop than that those used in many of other popular engine choices. Short 

props on float equipped aircraft don't work nearly as well as longer props. 

Long and slower turning propellers are more efficient and create much more 

thrust at slow speeds than faster turning short props, and thus pull a float 

equipped airplane out of the water a lot quicker. A good example of this in 

the certified aircraft word is the popular propeller upgrade on many float 

equipped Cessna 180s' in Alaska and Canada, where thy change out the 

standard 82 inch diameter McCauley CS props for the 88 inch diameter "sea 

plane" propellers. Just some food for thought.

Maybe you should look into the Corvair?

A bit more grunt and no cooling issues.

been flying for nearly 45 years.

and you can build two really nice Corvairs with all the bells and whistles for what a Jabiru costs.

I agree! That is my plan of attack. Check out Bill Clapps web page http://www.billclapp.com/ go to his corvair section. He will build you a complete ready to go with 1 hour of breakin in time for around 7K with video ready to drop in!... I believe he will even cut costs more if you exchange a covair engine with him. Give him a call and tell him I sent you. It is worth a call and he is a wealth of information.

I haven't yet seen a cooling problem that they haven't been able to solve, and I see that in other new installations as well. I'm not building a float plane and I'm going with a cruise prop anyway, so the Jabiru will be just fine for my needs.

hey, don't get me wrong; I'm not saying the Jabiru is a bad engine, it's not.

I like the Jabirus, they are a beautiful piece of work!

I just think they are over priced.



But then again it is all billet...
